Will New Hampshire Become the Fifth State with Gay Marriage?

New Hampshire Flag

The New Hampshire Senate will be voting this Wednesday on whether to pass a same-sex marriage bill. The bill was narrowly passed by the NH House of Representatives last month in a 186-179 vote. If all goes well, the bill will land on the desk of Governor John Lynch for approval.

Lynch has previously stated his opposition to gay marriage, but has not stated whether or not he would veto the bill. Keep your fingers crossed. Since a veto override is not as likely in this case, this will depend a lot on Lynch's decision!

  1. I am a proud resident of the state of New Hampshire. I emailed my State Senator in support of the legislation. I hope it passes the Senate and the governor’s desk! Years from now, I think we’ll be able to look back at the debate that has taken place over gay marriage, and hopefully laugh about how silly all of this is. Let’s hope New Hampshire falls on the right side of history and takes this progressive step!!

  2. Everyone thought Vermont wouldn’t survive a veto over either but it did, never give up hope! I’m not and I’m South Carolina.

  3. I’m also a NH resident, and I sent emails to every single State Senator, whether they were mine or not! I wanted my voice to be heard, and for equal marriage rights to be the rule of law here in NH. I have high hopes for tomorrow!

  4. Matt, that’s not true at all. The initial votes in Vermont were close enough that there was a lot of reasonable expectation that a veto could be overridden.
And in South Carolina? Give up hope. I know literally over a dozen people who have moved from Boston to SC. Without fail, they are back within 18 months and I get to say “I told you so.” again.
