I refuse to participate in this poll. How self-hating is it for a GAY blog not to include the one gay character from the show as a possible fuckable option? Although these three have some great qualities, I’m for Kurt. Well, actually I’d prefer Chris Colfer over a fictional character that’s a bit more over the top than I’d otherwise like, but keeping with the theme — Kurt. And I really liked the 4 minutes number from Power of Madonna, especially Kurt’s strut. So, Kurt FTW, none of the above.

@KLB. It’s not about him being gay, it’s about how his character is not an attractive character. Maybe that says something about the show itself (i.e. that the gay one sounds like a castrati), but this comparison is between the show’s contenders for heartthrob. Also, Jonathan Groff is gay in real life, so I think he is “like us”–whatever the fuck that means.

AMEN!!! I totally agree with Justsomeguy! It’s like the show Modern Family. The gay couple is very funny, BUT, when are we going to be able to educate people about us being “normal” when we still have the queerest stuff being shown all the time. Dumb! And btw, PUCK PUCK PUCK!!!!!

Regarding the gay character in Glee – as someone who doesn’t act particularly feminine but also doesn’t characterize himself as straight acting (I don’t like pussy, so labeling myself as str8 or any derivation is bullshit), I LOVE seeing effiminate gay guys on TV. The more often we expose mainstream America to the extremes, the easier it will be for them to accept the average gay guys. To be extremely honest, the gay guy on Glee turns me off majorly (although I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that he’s so young). But if he becomes the model for how the average American thinks gay guys are, then that makes it a hell of a lot easier on the rest of us.
And let’s be honest – who the fuck wants a world where gay guys are accepted as long as they act like straight guys? That’s a hell of a lot of pressure. I like doing construction work and I like watching the Gilmore Girls DVDs. I’d love a world where I can do both (and anything else I want to do) without being judged. The more people get comfortable with the extremely effiminate gay guys, the better it is for the rest of us who don’t want to be scolded if we start singing to “Wicked” or slip up in public and admit that we think Robert Downey Jr. is hot as shit.

It’s only fair the more effeminate ones get more media visibility. Filming inside a closet can be a bit claustrophobic, especially when you consider the fact that it is an over-the-top comic musical. Ergo, the campy types. After all, it’s not like many straight-acting high school students have the guts to go around singing out and proud and aloud… I’m juz saying!

What my beef is with the portrayal of gay characters on/in TV/movies is that it always has to be about them being gay. Like, a character’s gayness will be the central point of the story. Every plot point revolves around him being gay.
Why can’t there be characters where being gay is just an incidental part of the story? Like, bank robbers, who just happen to be gay and in love with each other (already done. Plata Quemada, an Argentinean film. I recommend you watch it). Or, an action hero who also happens to be gay. I don’t mind the stereotypes sometimes, because the stereotypes are funny. But geez, not everything in a gay man’s life revolves around the fact that he is gay.
