No, the magazine cover you see above isn’t a joke. It’s the actual cover of a publication known as Vermont Catholic, which is distributed by the Diocese of Burlington. While the image in question was intended to depict the rite of ordination, it kind of just looks like a blowjob in progress. And it’s not just our filthy minds who picked up on that.
To add insult to injury, the issue also includes a letter from Bishop Salvatote Matano, discussing this year’s settlement between twenty-six former altar boys and the Vermont Catholic church. How is it that nobody picked up on this before it was printed?
For the record, we’re not picking on the Catholic church with this post. We don’t even consider this picture to be funny. In a way, it’s actually kind of tragic. One can only assume that no harm was intended, and this was merely an accident of naivety. Yet it still comes off as a little insensitive, no?

Its not a act of naivety – most people would not have seen what you and others have apparently seen in this photo.
The only ones who see a blow job in this picture are those looking for opportunities to mock Catholics. It’s a photo of an ancient rite of the laying of hands carried out by many different Christian denominations.

This may be a innocent, but wasn’t there a Ad that was going to be run in New York earlier this year, inwhich it had 2 men not even touching, but was stopped due to it looking to gay? I don’t even remember what the ad was for.
It may be an ancient rite, but there are clearly less-innuendo-laden angles they could’ve chosen. If today you were to hear the words Catholic Church, the phrase “child rape” soon comes to mind (“scandal” if you’re feeling generous). It does not take a dirty mind to see the filth that this photo (Freudian slip?) depicts.
Just keeping to the past century alone, the Church hasn’t even begun to feel the pain it deserves.
As a former Catholic turned proud atheist, I wouldn’t have turned my head twice at this cover.

It’s really that simple. I grew up Catholic myself and even I see that this is wrong. They really could have chosen a different angle.

I attended Catholic school for 8 years…I am forming a new group and “another” class action suit again the church.
Here I was ready and willing and “knew I was gay almost from birth” and not one priest laid a hand on me…
I feel that has really hurt my self image, when I found out about all the action going on around me!
Get a sense of humor guys…sure there are some very well intention people involved in and around the church…and there are some evil and twisted sons-of-a-bitches too! If you didn’t experience it you don’t know…some of those nuns and the mental damage they bestowed on many children are just as guilty as the pervy priests preying on children.
Not to mention that the Catholic church is one of the richest corporations in the world! They could pay every victim millions and never notice it!
