Soap Opera Actor Quits Because of Gay Kiss

Chris Engen, Young and the Restless

The mayor of San Angelo isn't the only one quitting his job over gay matters. Reports are saying that Young and the Restless actor Chris Engen has left the show because he refused to kiss his male co-star Yani Gellman.

You could say that Engen had every right to refuse to swap spit with another dude, but he's still contractually obligated to the show. Plus, if you're going to go gay for a scene, it's not exactly punishment to do it with Yani Gellman.

  1. If he can’t kiss another guy, whether he’s gay or not, it means he shouldn’t be an actor at all.

  2. makes ya wonder why the cheap ploy w/ YnR.
It’s one thing if the character was already bi or gay but to throw it out of left field when there’s never been anything in his character background, why put it out there.
I suppose the writers thought, oh we have this cute guy on the show, let’s have him kiss.
yet none of the other male actors have had to do it.
we don’t know the whole story, so we can’t say it’s just cause a kiss scene. If I was an actor I would be standing behind my character and say why would he need to be doing this etc?
rather weak for the writers but also on his part, it’s part of the job to go w/ the scene.

  3. i have to agree; what kind of idiot becomes an actor, agrees to play a gay role, but refuses to kiss another actor? this was pathetic enough in the ’80s when (i think it was) Billy Campbell refused to kiss his boyfriend on dynasty (he was getting paid around $80K per episode, for heaven’s sake) –it’s beyond pathetic now. he should choose another career path.

  4. Well, considering Academy Award winners Susan Sarandon, Christopher Walken, Marisa Tomei, and other stars such as Julianne Moore, James Earl Jones, Kevin Bacon and Meg Ryan got their start in soaps–with many of them saying they were terrific training grounds–I think it’s acceptable to call them actors.
And it’s not a cheap ploy on the part of Y from what I understand, they’ve got a gripping storyline planned that includes not only the two characters already mentioned but others as well. This could be the most talked-about story of the summer in TV.

  5. I just looked Yani Gellman up on imdb.com…he’s hot..I also agree with the first poster…If he can’t separate his own personal life or beliefs from the roles he plays he shouldn’t be an actor.
