No Fifth Season For Ugly Betty

Ugly Betty, TV, ABC, television, fourth season, gay, cancelled, poor ratings, won't be returning, fourth season, finale, ending

I guess it was too good to be true. We thought our TVs would be getting a dash of gayness when we heard some exciting news about True Blood and Glee, but it turns out that the gods of television are balancing things out. Yesterday, we received news that Bryan Batt's character Salvatore Romano wouldn't be returning to the fourth season of Mad Men. And today we've discovered that the fourth season of Ugly Betty will ultimately be its last.

I can't say I'm particularly surprised about this one. The US ratings have been consistently sliding since the show's debut, and I'll admit that I stopped watching towards the beginning of the second season. They had a good thing when they started, but the show just kept getting more over-the-top and ridiculous as they moved along. Obviously I'm not too sad about this news… how about you?

  1. It’s not too much of a shocker, but I thought the move to Wednesday would have helped. I agree that during the second season “Ugly Betty” definitely jumped the shark with the love triangle storyline. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that they’ll spin off Vanessa Williams into her own show, but I bet that’ll happen as quickly as Obama obliterating Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Sigh…

  2. I think ABC misread the concept of a “telenovela,” upon which Ugly Betty was based. Unlike an American soap opera, whose characters may have been on for decades, telenovelas last a set number of episodes. They’re not canceled; they just end, because the story is told (if you take “telenovela” literally, it almost seems to mean “TV novel”). Ratings aside, Ugly Betty wasn’t meant to keep going.

  3. totally shocked.
the did pretty badly by the end second season, but then they recovered.
    still watching on weekly basis.
will be sad. i really like the acting in the series. and it’s fun enough.
    🙁
    betty….

  4. i think it’s entertaining, but i won’t be too sad about it ending. i kind of agree that vanessa williams should have a spin off for her own show, but i don’t see that happening with the way her character is going lately. constantly fighting to stay in the business while everyone seems to hate her or be scared of her.
