Hot Flash: Jim Wilkinson

It was extremely refreshing to stumble upon Jim Wilkinson‘s photography. Although a good portion of his portfolio is devoted to male nudes, he avoids objectifying turning his subjects into blatantly sexual objects or over-the-top artistic abstract forms. Perhaps I should let him speak for himself…

“A perfect body is not a requirement and I’ve found that often it is a detriment,” he writes. “What I try to capture is the model’s ‘soul’: that unique combination of personality, heart and past experiences that makes each flesh and blood man a one-of-a-kind piece of art.”

And now I’ll let his work do the talking! Quite literally. In this particular series, a group of models pose with phrases painted onto their bodies. Some of the images pack a powerful message, as they touch upon topics such as coming out, spirituality and serving in the military. I’m lovin’ it, but what do you think?

  1. I think it’s an interesting new take. Obviously the guys are not the stereotypical models that we always end up seeing which is refreshing. The body paint does what it should. Not only are they exposing their bodies for everyone to see, they’re also exposing past experiences that have gone on to shape who they are as people. It’s as if they’re exposing all of who they are for everyone to see.

  2. Anyone else notice the Spock ears on “I feel invisible around you”? All the photos are great 😀

  3. I’ve known Jim’s brilliant work for years now. I’m so happy that he’s getting the exposure he so deserves.

  4. ^^^

Someone wasn’t breast fed as a baby.

Anyway, nice post. I like the first two (about the military thing – with the DADT on the back of the arm and GAY across his front – very deep)

And I liked the last one. Just because the pose is good, and the the NI and CE on his butt cheeks is cute and ironic.

The others… meh, just not feeling them. The models could have been used better – ie: Actually being in poses that emphasize the message written on them. Or, in fact, with some of them – having better messages.

  5. I really appreciate his simplicity and vision. They guys are all handsome and the messages are clear.

  6. The concept is lame and cliche. And the photography is totally boring. It’s like a weird gay PostSecret.

  7. Great photo’s, I wouldn’t expect anything else from Jim…Keep up the good work, I’m amazed at how far you’ve come with your photography…a lot farther than (Jim, if you remember this…)”photography”. Good job, man…now I can say “I know Jim Wilkinson”….Luv you bud…
