Civil Unions in Hawaii

Hawaii

Civil unions are becoming more likely in the state of Hawaii. 32 out of 51 members of the state House of Representatives have signed on to the bill, meaning it is likely to pass once it comes to a vote. The state Senate is a different matter, where the committee that would oversee the bill is split, with one member, Sen. Robert Bunda (D-22nd) holding the swing vote.

The Family Equality
Coalition
, a group formed to fight for civil unions in Hawaii, have been able to get some major allies like labor unions and religious leaders to join their cause.

We will keep a close on eye on this one, but for now it looks like Hawaii maybe joining New Hampshire, New Jersey and Vermont in providing marriage equality!

  1. Civil unions are not marriage equality. You probably don’t believe so either, deep down, or you would have put the 2 states with real marriage for gay couples in that list with the civil unity states.

  2. Interesting where a State with such a strong Democratic base, Hawaii’s voters are fairly conservative when it comes to moral issues such as abortion and gay rights. I think the moderator is putting his cart before the horse.
And E-man is spot on…civil unions should not be likened with the two States where gay couples can lawfully marry.
