So the homophobes in California passed Proposition 8. Where do we go from here? The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) has already filed several lawsuits essentially claiming that the purpose of the Constitution is to prevent a majority from squashing the rights of a minority. If there were a successful ballot measure that prevented old people from voting, would it stand?
I’m hopeful that the same California Supreme Court that decided 4-3 to allow gay marriage will rule that the Marriage Ban is unconstitutional. Of course, this opens the grim possibility of the case going to the U.S. Supreme Court, which, given its conservative tilt, might strike down all gay marriages.
It’s electrifying we have our first black President, but I wonder when an openly gay man or woman will be elected to the highest office in the land.
