World’s First Gay Head of State

Johanna Siguroardottir

The world will see its first openly gay head of state as Iceland's Social Affairs Minister, Johanna Siguroardottir, is set to become prime minister after the collapse of the government amid financial crises. Siguroardottir is married to Jonina Leosdottir, a popular writer in Iceland, and has two adult sons.

Becoming the first openly gay world leader of a modern state may seem like big news to the rest of us, but in Iceland they are taking it in stride.

“If she is gay, that is not an issue
at all,” said Olafur Sigurdsson, deputy chief of mission at the
Icelandic Embassy in Washington. “We are very liberal in that
sense. It has never been an issue for her as a politician.”

I think having the first openly gay leader is a huge achievement, though that title probably belongs to Alexander the Great. What are your thoughts?
