Weekly Top Ten: When Kylie Takes Over

We hate to make such declarative statements so early in the season, but it’s becoming clear to us that Kylie Minogue‘s “All The Lovers” is the definitive gay summer anthem of 2010. One could even call it the new “When Love Takes Over”, which might be awkward considering that the artists behind 2009’s unofficial song of summer are both still on the charts.

For the record, we have nothing against “Alejandro”. Though we initially met some of Lady Gaga‘s early antics with skepticism, we’ve come to embrace that wondrous “free bitch”. However, we just can’t accept her latest hit as the song of summer. It’s good and all, but it doesn’t scream, “I’m making out in the pool with a total bathing suit boner”.

Speaking of boners, I’m sure I’ll kill a few by letting you know that Robyn, Kelis, Eminem and B.o.B. didn’t get enough votes to stay on the countdown. They’re joined in the scrap pile by Wild Card rejects Fefe Dobson, Lolene and Dennis Ferrer.

So how does this all work? If you’re a Weekly Top Ten virgin, help me check my balls while I explain the rules to you. Each week you’ll be presented with ten songs. You get to vote for up to three that you’d like to see move on to the next week. From those results, we’ll take the five tunes with the highest percentages, a song we save and four other contributions. These selections will make up the following week’s charts.

Wishing there was a “none of the above” option? Well, quit your bitching and tell us what you want to see on the charts by leaving a suggestion in the comments. We listen to nearly every song you recommend, and if we think it’ll have a chance… you might see it here next time around!

To check out the charts and vote, follow the JUMP:

  1. Kylie Minogue – All The Lovers (LW – 2, W7): You can accuse us of downright rigging the polls, but we weren’t the only ones who put in our two cents. As far as we’re concerned, Kylie Minogue won this round fair and square. Let’s just hope she has a bigger lead in the future! She only beat Gaga by two votes.
  2. Lady Gaga – Alejandro (LW – 1, W5): We’re prepared for the “monsters” to revolt after this loss, so don’t expect Kylie to hold that number one spot for very long. Our prediction? “Alejandro” will be back on top within the next week. Care to prove us wrong?
  3. Kelly Rowland – Commander (LW – 3, W10): Yes, Kelly Rowland and David Guetta were responsible for last summer’s unofficial gay anthem, but this one just isn’t made for sunny days and slip ‘n’ slides. There’s more of a sweaty, dark indoors dance party vibe to it all. Not that there’s anything wrong with that… a little sweatin’ indoors never hurt anyone!
  4. Adam Lambert – If I Had You (LW – 5, W3): While we’re still not crazy about Adam’s latest single, it’s nice to see an openly gay artist represented on the charts. You can hate on him all you want to, but the numbers don’t lie. Your fellow Manhunt Daily readers are digging this track.
  5. Scissor Sisters – Fire With Fire (LW – 9, W2): Speaking of artists who are open about their sexuality, the Scissor Sisters managed to squeeze into fifth place. Can their latest single gain enough momentum to stay on the charts? Or is it lacking the right “thump” to stay in the mix?
  6. La Roux – Bulletproof (LW – 7, W2): We love a good comeback, so it’s only logical that we’d choose to save La Roux this week. Although this song may be over a year old, we still feel the same way when it’s blasting over the speakers.
  7. Maroon 5 – Misery (DEBUT): Reactions were mixed towards the new music video, but most of us were able to agree that lead singer Adam Levine is one sexy-ass motherfucker. Will he follow in Robin Thicke’s footsteps and utilize his sex appeal to stay on the charts? Stay tuned in to find out!
  8. Taio Cruz – Dynamite (DEBUT): Taio Cruz is blowing up! In honor of all the fireworks that will be exploding this weekend, perhaps you should consider voting for him? Or you can choose a different song. We don’t really mind either way.
  9. Selena Gomez & The Scene – Round & Round (WILD CARD): Even though Fefe Dobson received a whole lot of love in the comments, this Disney star wound up beating her in the end. Does she have what it takes to stay on the Weekly Top Ten?
  10. Marina & The Diamonds – Oh No! (DEBUT): You either love her or hate her. Some of you are put off by Marina’s theatrical style, while others consider it the most appealing aspect of her music. We’re interested to see which side wins this battle…

  1. Although I can’t get the song out of my head from time to time (thanks to her recent appearance on BBC’s Radio 1), I still don’t see this as a proper summer song. Summer ain’t over!

  2. I love Kylie’s new album! She deserves to be #1… Gaga is getting old and her concert here in Boston on Saturday was a total snooze-fest

  3. Kylie all the way. I also showed my love for La Roux and Kelly Rowland. For the wild card next week I want to suggest “Just Be Good To Green” by Professor Green Feat. Lily Allen. Great track and it samples one of the dance classics of the 80s.

  4. dynamite by taio cruz is a total party song.

loving “get involved” by ginuwine ft missy elliot and timbaland.

and “hot ‘n fun” by N.E.R.D. and nelly furtado! love it!

  5. Too bad Dennis Ferrer’s song didn’t make the cut. It’s a total party anthem this weekend for Toronto Pride. Kylie gets one of my votes because she deserves to be on top. I like the Lily Allen song with Professor Green. She looks fierce in the video wearing Chanel and Valentino dresses.

  6. Get the new Scissor Sisters CD. The track “Sex & Violence” is the hottest song/recording I’ve heard in years!

  7. I’ll go either with Ne-Yo or the Lily Allen track with that nerdy British rapper. Doesn’t he look a lot like Michael Cera?
The only reason I like the song is because she’s singing the hook and it’s a sample of “Just be good to me”, one of my favorite songs from the 80’s.

  8. Kelis/Acapella?

    Cascada/Fever?

    Fergie/Gettin’ Over You?

    Goldfrapp/Rocket?

    Samantha/U-Turn?

    Bastien Laval/Restlessness?

    And HELLO, Katy Perry/California Gurls!

Also very strong: Robyn/Dancing on My Own

  9. I love Kylie Minogue’s new Album, but I don’t feel that All the Lover’s is the best song to have as the Song of Summer. If another one of the songs from her album was to compete (Better than today,Looking for an angel) I may vote for it. But until then, Gaga.
