Weekly Top Ten: Pink Stomps On Katy’s Face

Well, this is becoming a bit of a trend! For the sixth week in a row, bad-ass pop star Pink has rocked our Weekly Top Ten countdown, despite the controversial return of Katy Brand‘s number one hit “Firework”. The two singers will duke it out on this weekend’s charts, but only one of them can win in the end. Who’ll you be voting for?

But never mind that for a moment! Let’s talk about who you won’t be voting for. This week we’re forced to say goodbye to Kylie Minogue, Fantasia Barrino, Linkin Park and Natalia Kills, along with Wild Card rejects B.o.B, Sufjan Stevens and Twin Sister.

So how does this all work? If you’re a Weekly Top Ten virgin, slip a finger into Chase Hostler while I explain the rules to you. Each week you’ll be presented with ten songs. You get to vote for up to three that you’d like to see move on to the next week. From those results, we’ll take the five tunes with the highest percentages, a song we save and four other contributions. These selections will make up the following week’s charts.

Wishing there was a “none of the above” option? Well, quit your bitching and tell us what you want to see on the charts by leaving a suggestion in the comments. We listen to nearly every song you recommend, and if we think it’ll have a chance… you might see it here next time around!

– Dewitt

To check out the charts and cast your vote, follow the JUMP:

  1. Pink – Raise Your Glass (LW – 1, W11): Pink may have been knocked out of the number one position on Billboard’s Hot 100, but she still has a strong lead on our countdown. She only has four more weeks until we retire her from the charts. Can she hold the number one spot until then?
  2. Katy Brand – Firework (LW – 6, W2): Is it too soon to start referring to her by this name? After all, we’re just trying to respect the girl’s wishes! Even though her music video has as much depth as an episode of Degrassi: The Next Generation, you guys seem to really love this chick. Not that we’re judging or anything.
  3. Glee Cast – Teenage Dream (LW – 2, W5): We’re not denying that the cast of Glee is super talented. They just don’t belong on this countdown. You can call me a “fascist” or a “douchebag”, but this list should primarily be about original tracks. Or covers which excel beyond Auto-Tune karaoke territory. Don’t take it personal. Just vote your hardest and make the most of this opportunity.
  4. Cher – You Haven’t Seen The Last of Me (LW – 3, W4): To further drive my point home, here’s a mind-blowing power ballad by a legendary vocalist, and it’s sitting behind a perfectly decent acapella cover of “Teenage Dream”. There’s something wrong with that. We’re all for the democratic process, but not when it leads to bad news for Cher. She’s not a diva. She’s the diva.
  5. Rihanna – Only Girl (In The World) (LW – 4, W14): There’s only one more week until Rihanna’s retired from the countdown, and she’s celebrating it on the brink of extinction. Will you give her enough votes to stay in the top five? Or has all this meant nothing to you?
  6. Natasha Bedingfield – Strip Me (LW – 7, W2): This was the most difficult decision we’ve ever made. Okay, so that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but we weren’t sure who to save for this round. Two of our faves, Fantasia and Natalia Kills, were in the bottom two positions. While we could have made a statement by saving Linkin Park, they probably wouldn’t have survived another week. And we didn’t want to save Kylie just because she’s Kylie. In the end, the vote went to Natasha…
  7. Adele – Rolling In The Deep (DEBUT): We’re warning you in advance. If Adele doesn’t make it into the top five, we’re going to save her in the next edition. Don’t let that discourage you from voting for her! Truthfully, this woman deserves to be in the number one spot!
  8. Michael Jackson & Akon – Hold My Hand (DEBUT): You know how we didn’t want to save Kylie just because she’s Kylie? Well, we’re including this track just because it’s Michael. We’re not thoroughly impressed by any of the releases from his upcoming posthumous album, though at least we can rest assured this has his actual voice on it.
  9. Edward Maya – Stereo Love (DEBUT): As some of you noted, “Stereo Love” has been around for quite some time now. It’s just beginning to gain popularity on this side of the pond, so we thought we’d give it a chance on the charts. Better late than never, right?
  10. T.I. f/ Christina Aguilera – Castle Walls (WILD CARD): There weren’t many votes in the Wild Card round, which doesn’t bode well for this week’s winner. We’d like to think Christina Aguilera would be enough to push T.I. over the edge, but sadly her name doesn’t mean what it used to.

  1. Sad to see that Fantasia didn’t enough votes to come back this week 🙁

My votes went to Firework, Teenage Dream and Only Girl in the World

    This week the votes

  2. I’m sad about Fantasia too, “I’m Doin’ Me” is an excellent track. And sad that they didn’t save Kylie just because she’s Kylie. 🙁

That being said, I voted for Cher, P!nk and Adele.

  3. Glee is like Kidz Bop for adults. It’s like, why not just listen to the real thing? (and yes, I see the irony of referring to Katy Perry as “the real thing)

  4. Kidz Bop — Oops! Glee — is charting even on the Hot 100. I really like Natasha Bedingfield’s new song. Her first singles from each album are always good, then she disappears until the next first single. She’s got my vote!

  5. I’m also disappointed about Fantasia. I’m actually disappointed about the lack of love for R&B music overall on the Top 10. That said… I voted for Adele, T.I & Christina, & Michael & Akon. Hold My Hand is no Thriller…or even You Rock My World. But it’s Michael.

It’s said that the phrase “doesn’t mean what it used to” was used to describe Christina Aguilera. How far has the music industry fallen that we’ve turned away from truly talented vocalists like her and turned our attention to pretty yet vacuous & talentless studio creations?

No disrespect to Cher, but my third vote had to go to Adele. She is phenomenal. Chasing Pavements was great…and her cover of To Make You Feel My Love was VERY chlling (in a good way). Rolling In The Deep is great! I wish my favorite British blue-eyed soul singer, Joss Stone, could get the kind of critical praise Adele enjoys.

  6. Agreed Jason, Firework is such a disgusting pandering to a gay fanbase that will follow her as long she keeps up the slutty club music and random shoutouts. I STILL have yet to hear her in a live performance sound anything other than terrible. If someone gave me a free ticket to her concert I would not go. The Christina comment and the performance of her recent album shows that talent isn’t the driving force of popularity. If music was about talent she would be top 3, her voice is astounding.

I voted for Pink (love her, and amazing live!), Adele (already preordered the album) and Christina/T.I.

  8. I’m not voting. I refuse to. Firstly because I don’t particularly like any of the songs on the list, and secondly because the only song I actually did like didn’t make the cut. Natalia Kills should have stayed, and Natasha should’ve gone. I just listened to strip me, and it made me want to vomit when I realized she sounds alot like Justin Bieber.

  10. I voted for Cher, Adele and T.I. I still believe in Christina Aguilera’s vocal talent, no matter what the haters say. We don’t have really performers like her in this decade and it’s sad.

Kylie deserved to stay because she’s Kylie and not a phony like Katy Brand. By the way, Firework was a return to the chart, so her total accumulated weeks should be counted, not just the last two.

And speaking of coming back, since Rihanna is about to retire, maybe you can give a second chance to “What’s my name?”. I know Drake is awful, but that song grew on me.

  11. Few things.
    Glee is terrible.
Cher sounds like a man (though I did vote for her because Burlesque was a fantastic movie)
Christina Aguilera’s Show Me How You Burlesque should be on this list.

  12. Hey, Joe. Remember last week Dewitt said “no more Burlesque songs”. You better start a Facebook group or do something to get his attention because there’s no love for Christina around here 🙁

I still want to see “Resuscitate Me” by September. It’s such a great pop tune. Or do we have to wait until becomes a massive hit in Europe and then crosses over to the US in about a year?

  13. So odd how that works isn’t it Dewitt? One week Katy suddenly slips from the top 5 to off the chart and then back up to #2 when you decide to ‘give her a second chance’.

    lawl

P!nk, Katy, and Cher for me. Stop trying to transform pop music into some academic subject worthy of debate. It’s all crap and has nothing to do with talent. It’s superficial and produced for the masses.

The only thing you have to ask yourself is: “Does this sound good?”

    The end.

  14. Well said, Rob. Pop music is supposed to be fun and uncompromising. To make you happy or to make you sing or dance. Just a way of entertainment.

I have a suggestion for the Wild Card: Attraction by Medina. Maybe she can compete against September and have a Scandinavian face off, Danish vs. Swedish.

My votes went to Cher, Adele and the T.I. colab with Xtina.

  15. I’m happy to see Adele here. Her other song Make you feel my love should have been here as well months ago. Suggestion for next week is Usher’s new single “More”.

  16. Voted for Katy, Glee Cast, and Rihanna. I mean, if you are going to just talk shit about the people you want gone they why ask us to vote? We all obviously have very different tastes in music – all valid of course – and it just annoys me to see constant bashing of an artist I actually enjoy (and have gone to concerts to hear). I get it. Your blog, your way, blah blah blah. But sometimes the will of the people overrides dictator-like behavior.

  17. I am done with this countdown.
There are many people on this blog who despise ‘bitchy’ comments, and in many cases I say with good cause. The unfortunate thing is, there’s no chance it’s going to stop. People always say “if you don’t like the bitchiness, then don’t read”. I am taking that advice because I cannot take the bitchiness of the posts, especially that in the top 10. I refuse to partake in a poll that is not monitored objectively as this translates to the detriment of other’s opinions.
At the end of the day we all have ONE vote, and the same applies to the monitors of this blog. The only difference is, they should have the decency to keep their mouths shut so that the readers can feel completely comfortable in expressing their opinions and that their vote actually means something.
This greater responsibility and integrity is definitely lacking, and I know I am not the only one who thinks it.
Take it on board. Isn’t that the point of an opinion poll?

  18. I’m wondering how old the people who vote on this thing are, cause it’s all mostly crap music while Twin Sister who are smokin it in the indie scene did the worst in the wild card. Seriously Cher and Xtina? This kinda feels like grandpa nite at the tubs.

  19. I just wanted to respond to the “Kylie is the real deal” comment. She actually is not. She doesn’t write or produce any of her music. She plays no instrument. So in a way she is more mass produced than others on here. Katy Perry writes her own music, writes music of other big name stars, and helps out in the production. That to me is more “real” than having people hand you music, sing into a computer, and then have your handlers do all the rest.

  20. Amen, M.

“…but this list should primarily be about original tracks.”

Says who? Shouldn’t we get to decide what this list should be about? If 55,000 said they wanted a cover of “I Dreamed a Dream” by Lindsay Lohan, then that’s what should be on the list. If people continue to say they want the Glee Cast version of music, then that is what you give them. This isn’t DEWITT’S Weekly Top Ten. It is Manhunt’s Weekly Top Ten. Let them eat mother f%@&!#’ cake.

  21. Cher deserves to be here because she’s legendary. She’s got my vote and also Adele. This is a long shot, but here’s a suggestion for the Wild Card: “Do it like a dude” by Jessie J. One of the UK imports to watch next year. She co-wrote Party in the USA and I know a lot of guys here loved that song. She’s also written for Christina and for Justin Timberlake. Just give it a chance.

  22. I totally agree with your comment regarding Christina and how far the music industry has fallen. In the past few months, I have gone from listening to the radio in my truck to listening totally to cd’s of truly talented artists. What the music industry is trying to shove down our throats as talent is truly sad. I cringe when I hear all of the off key warbling that is going on (I have to put Cher in this category) or the thin vocals. Not to mention the lack of good lyrics. I like my ears. I refuse to torture them with the crap being put out today.

  23. I always find myself coming back to this, although I don’t like any of the songs here. Suggestion for WildCard: PJ Harvey’s ‘Written on the Forehead’. It basically knocks everything off this list, since Sufjan didn’t make it 🙁

I may suggest Robyn’s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’ or ‘Time Machine’ for the WildCard as well. Great dance/pop songs!

Just, please, get Christina Aguilera off the list and I will remain forever loyal to this blog. She’s no different from Ke$ha or Katy Perry, in the sense that she does not sing with any passion whatsoever. Like, she just shouts. So stop judging Ke$ha, Katy & Rihanna!

ps- Big Boi has a song with TI called ‘Tangerine’ and it is effin’ AWESOME.

  24. I second the suggestion for Jessie J’s song. She’s the one to watch for in 2011 and she just scored the Critics Choice BRIT Award earlier today. She’s joining previous years winners like Adele, Florence + The Machine and Ellie Goulding. Give it a chance and show some diversity in the countdown.
