Weekly Top Ten: No More Plastic Bags

What does the title of this post mean? Katy Perry‘s “Firework” has finally been voted out of our Weekly Top Ten countdown! We realize some of you may be disappointed, but there are really more important matters at hand… Like, which side are you going to take in the great Pink vs. Cher 2010 showdown?

Along with Mrs. Russell Brand, we’re forced to say goodbye to Utada Hikaru, Hurts and the Black Eyed Peas. Their songs weren’t able to receive enough votes to stay on the countdown, so we had to send them packing! Hopefully, they’ll have better luck next time.

So how does this all work? If you’re a Weekly Top Ten virgin, grab onto Justun‘s round butt cheeks while I explain the rules to you. Each week you’ll be presented with ten songs. You get to vote for up to three that you’d like to see move on to the next week. From those results, we’ll take the five tunes with the highest percentages, a song we save and four other contributions. These selections will make up the following week’s charts.

Wishing there was a “none of the above” option? Well, quit your bitching and tell us what you want to see on the charts by leaving a suggestion in the comments. We listen to nearly every song you recommend, and if we think it’ll have a chance… you might see it here next time around!

– Dewitt

To check out the charts and cast your vote, follow the JUMP:

  1. Pink – Raise Your Glass (LW – 1, W9): It’s time to raise your glasses again, because Pink has topped the charts for the fourth week in a row. In the past, she had some trouble against Kelis and Kylie Minogue. And now that they’re both back on the countdown, will she have trouble keeping her lead? Stay tuned in to find out!
  2. Cher – You Haven’t Seen The Last of Me (LW – 7, W2): It’s ridiculous that Britney Spears runs around calling herself a “living legend”, when there are actual living legends like Cher in this world. On this track from Burlesque, the sixty-four year-old diva delivers a performance that will surely get the crowd on their feet. Oh, and did I mention she was only five votes away from dethroning Pink?
  3. Glee Cast – Teenage Dream (LW – 2, W3): Well, we got rid of one Katy Perry song, but her presence still remains on this cover by the Glee cast. This song appeared in the episode “Never Been Kissed”, in which Kurt comes face-to-face with his love interest, Blaine. Yay for gay?
  4. Robyn – Indestructible (LW – 5, W7): The final installment of Robyn’s Body Talk series dropped earlier this week, and the Swedish pop star celebrates by moving up one position on our countdown. If you’d like to join in the celebration, then you should head to a store and pick up her damn album. Seriously!
  5. Rihanna – Only Girl (In The World) (LW – 4, W12): That Rihanna reign just won’t let up! After twelve weeks on our rankings, “Only Girl (In The World)” is still managing to hold its ground. If only the rest of the tracks on Loud were this awesome…
  6. Mike Posner – Please Don’t Go (LW – 9, W2): Did you really think I’d save Katy Perry from elimination? Hell to the fucking no! Honestly, she didn’t stand a chance against Mike Posner. Cute boys and awesome dance beats always beat songs about plastic bags. “Please Don’t Go” is my jam and a half!
  7. Kylie Minogue – Better Than Today (DEBUT): With the past two singles, there was no doubt Kylie would rocket to the top of our charts. We’re not so sure about “Better Than Today”. Although it may eventually hit the number one spot, there’s a chance that it’ll have to fight its way there.
  8. Kelis – Brave (DEBUT): Was the success of “Scream” just a fluke? Or does Kelis really have a supernatural hold on the M4M demographic? It won’t be too long before we find out! Even if this music video was a little too simple, we’ll always be rooting for “the first girl to scream on a track”. This is no exception to the rule.
  9. Bruno Mars – Grenade (DEBUT): Bruno Mars’ tunes are always a wee bit melodramatic and cheesy, but we have to give him some credit for bringing a different sound to the male pop scene. Alas, he probably doesn’t stand a chance against the dance floor divas…
  10. Erika Jayne – One Hot Pleasure (DEBUT): There’s no way in hell that Erika Jayne will make it to the next round. As much as we love her over-the-top style, she’s going up against some big names and even bigger tunes. Sexy men, simulated orgasms and pink leotards aren’t going to make up for a lackluster track.

  1. Tough choice this week, but Kylie and the Glee track had to be voted for and Cher got my last spot. Hate to miss out on Rihanna and P!nk but it had to happen.

  2. It makes no sense that Firework is gone already. People love it!

My votes went to Teenage Dream, Only Girl in the World and Grenade.

  3. i’m really looking forward to the ‘raise your glass’ fad to pass — the song is mediocre at best, and the video is cliche and dull

and definitely agree with RickyCarey: “firework” should be on that list [would be my first vote]

  4. And just as an aside, I don’t understand Mike Posner’s appeal. His music is good, not great…but sexy? If you’re into cute lesbians, sure. His facial hair is far too manicured for my tastes.

  5. Voted for Pink, Kylie and Robyn. God, I just LOVE their music; even though Better than Today was not the best choice for a single….

  6. Don’t really like any of these songs. So I call your bluff Dewitt. I want you to listen to Cannibal by Ke$ha. It doesn’t have to go on the countdown, but I doubt very many people could listen to it without shaking their ass. So humor me….just for shits and giggles.

  7. There’s never good music on there 🙁 other than Robyn that is. It’s always the same ol’ same ol’ dance-pop divas. Throw in some Sufjan in there, or Girls, or Big Boi, or Janelle Monae, Cee Lo or Kid Cudi! But I do like Bruno Mars. Grenade has the best line ever from a break-up song at the start of the second verse.

  8. I am shocked that Firework is gone as well.

I second “strip me” by Natasha Bedingfield and “cannibal” by kesha.

The Cher song is NOT good! It is boring and dull. I saw Burlesque – horrible movie – a trainwreck from start to finish, and I have to say Cher has had waaaaaaay tooooooooooo much work done! She looks horrible!!!!!

  9. hadn’t heard “cannibal” before – just youtubed it… and: no
song doesn’t do it for me in the slightest

  10. I voted for Kylie, Robyn and Erika Jayne (she’s this week’s underdog, even going against other dance divas).

I still want to see September’s “Resuscitate Me” on the Wild Card” and Dewitt, since you didn’t have that this week, at least two songs from that competition should make it to next week’s countdown.

  11. All these songs are crap! I’ve never understood the gay community’s love of soulless commercial fare…

  12. I also went with Kylie, Erika and Robyn. And I just got my copy of Body Talk, it’s a great dance album. Suggestion for next week for the Wild Card is “The Flood”, the highly anticipated and dramatic second single from Messy Little Raindrops by Ms. Cheryl Cole aka Britain’s sweetheart.

  13. Still waiting for the Official” dance remix of Cher’s song. There are many up on You Tube, but only one really good one so far. Almighty Club Mix kills.

  15. Firework voted off yet pieces of crap like “Only Girl” and “Better Than Today” remain? Interesting!

Utada leaving was unfortunate but it was awesome to see her on the top 10 for even two weeks. =) Too bad Cher didn’t win…I voted for Cher/Pink/Robyn and also agree with the sentiment about your poll not reflecting popular opinion (more like your own opinion) regarding Firework. Thought we had a deal where you’d shut the fuck up about that song anyways. 😉

  17. It’s sad that Glee is ahead of anyone of these artists. Ugh. P!nk, Cher and Robyn got my vote. I would nominate any of Christina’s songs from “Burlesque” on this as well. The movie was awesome and so much fun. How Glee and anything Katy Perry has made is even up on here instead of Christina is beyond me. It’s sad to see people give up on talent for technological vocal creation…

  18. Strip Me by Natasha Bedingfield
    Cannibal by Kesha
    Grace by Bran Van 3000

Get rid of the cher song – the song sucks – it really does.

  19. – Voted for Erika Jayne because she has actual vocal talent, plus Josh Kloss from the Teenage Dream video is also on the clip for One Hot Pleasure

    – Didn’t vote for Cher, but it’s a great song. If you haven’t seen Birlesque, you should because is fun and campy and you’ll have a good time. Having said that, “Express” by Christina Aguilera should be here in the chart soon.

    – My actual suggestion for the Wild Card is the new Adelen single “Rolling in the deep”. Since everyone here complains about auto-tune and fake inspirational crap, how ’bout some real talent from the UK? It’s not the first time I recommend a British artist and trust me, it won’t be the last.

  20. And the other pieces on here have any more value than being fake/inspirational pieces of garbage? Haha don’t kid yourself. That label applies to just about anything pop-related. =)

But it’s not like we’re judging classical music. If something can carry a tune that’s all that is required. The content within the song doesn’t seem to matter as you can see by the list.

  21. You’re complaining about Katy’s plastic bag lyric but not Rihanna’s “I want you to love me like I’m a hot pie”? WTFFFFF

  22. Firework really should still be on – compared to some other stuff.

Don’t go see Burlesque. I cannot believe I wasted $15 on it. It is like Coyote Ugly but worse acting. Cher really looks bad. This song of hers puts me to sleep.

I really enjoy “Strip Me” by Natasha Bedingfield”.

I also love “Stereo Love” by Edward Maya ft. Alicia (its getting tonnes of playtime on US radios and in clubs).

And I LOVE both “Blow” and “Cannibal” by Kesha. Not sure which one will be next, but both of them have already cracked the top 100.

  23. Robyn’s CD is one the best this year. She got my vote along with Kylie and the wonderful Erika Jayne.

And to all those who hate Burlesque and its soundtrack, they are not that bad. Express by Christina Aguilera was the best song in the movie.

  24. Let’s get Express to this countdown soon. I recommend Burlesque also. It was a fun movie, just that. If you want something to make you think then go and see The King’s Speech with Colin Firth.

For the Wild Card I want to recommend The Flood by Cheryl Cole.

  25. Enough with Burlesque songs..they are not that good. There are at least 5 better songs on Christina’s Bionic Album – one of the most under-rated and least promoted albums of the year. Check out My Girls, Elastic Love, Bionic, Glam for a few examples.

I really like Strip Me by Natasha Bedingfield and Girlfriend in the City by Nelly Furtado
