Uruguay may be lifting a ban that prevents individuals with "open sexual deviations" from entering into military academies. Homosexuality was previously listed as a mental illness or disorder that would prevent someone from fulfilling their duty.
As of now, Minister Jose Bayardi has signed the decree, but it still needs the approval of President Tabare Vazquez. Either way, it seems like they'll have the US beat, given that President Barack Obama is too busy fixing everything George Bush broke to deal with "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". I look forward to and will wait patiently for the day he fulfills his commitment to change the policy. Until then, let's give a premature congratulations to Uruguay. We'll spare you on the obvious puns here…
