Ricky Martin On Fear Of Coming Out

It’s that time of year when Out magazine names their 100 most influential people in the gay community, and admitted homosexual Ricky Martin is front and center. Martin opens up about why he was hesitant to come out of the closet.

“Something as simple as standing at that (gay rights group’s) dinner and saying, ‘I’m gay,’ creates so may emotions I’ve never felt before. I didn’t do it earlier because of fear, and bottom line it was all in my head. I was seduced by fear and I was sabotaging most of my life—my music, my relationships with my friends, with my family, with everybody. That’s something I need to share because I know that a lot of people are going through what I went through, no matter what their age, and fear cannot control us.”

Ricky is joined on the Out 100 cover by sparkly ice princess Johnny Weir, celebrity decorator Nate Berkus, news commentator Rachel Maddow, and the gorgeous equestrienne Julianne Moore.

  1. i love ricky, but as i saw his interview on oprah i kept smh. more at her questions than his answers. i mean come on oprah, asking how he felt when he performed sexy on stage with women! he’s a performer. my goodness.

  2. This is probably the biggest cover OUT has: Rachel Maddow? Ricky Martin? All the biggest name in the media right now. And thank got they Julianne Moore as the “fruit fry” this year. At least she’s classy.

  3. As a gay man I understand where he has been and how his journey has taken him to where he is now. It is not an easy road. I am not so sure that his coming out is his decision or his managers. I just didn’t get a sincere feeling when I watched him on Oprah. I found myself wondering if it wasn’t all smoke and mirrors.

  4. I am sure that Ricky is sincere but after all those years of living in the spotlight while hiding in the closet, his personality, especially the face that he puts on to the public, must have been somewhat tainted. Some people just come across as disingenuous and lacking warmth and depth – Celine Dion is a classic example – but I’m sure they’re lovely people inside.

  5. Ricky martin? Really? Who remembers this loser or even cares anymore? I guess now that his career is over with the 90s, he figures he has to do something to get back in the spotlight. Too bad everyone already knew. Just another wetback with that “down low” secret, only this one wasn’t so secret. Hey Ricky– everyone knew from the moment they looked at you. Now quit wasting our time and go get that job that’s been waiting for you in a commercial kitchen.

  6. you are certainly entitled to belittle and berate ricky martin, BUT I draw the line at the racist comments. As you stated Ricky Martin is a loser…You are a flaming BIGOT

  7. Career over?? The man can still sell out arenas in the US and, in case you hadn’t realised, there is a BIG world outside the US that still loves him. As Jim rightly said, small people….

  8. Why such the hate for Ricky? So…. It was easy for you to come out, Forward? I think the a great number of homosexual people had a tough time or are still struggling with coming out. What is that for you to judge? Sheesh! Bitter: party of one?

  9. I actually met Ricky Martin at a freinds house years ago in Los Angeles, He was a warm and freindly guy with a great smile that stood up and acknowledge you when you walked in the room, I have met a few celebrities and He was a very charming and thoughtful man.

  10. I’m really in doubt about this coming out proccess. Nobody was even talking about Ricky Martin anymore, and now he decides to come out and is in a lot of TV shows (like Oprah). Sometimes, I don’t even know if he’s really gay or if it’s just a marketing plan. If he wants to prove me about his sexuality, my bed has room for that! (lol)

  11. Nate Berkus and Ricky martin can hang with me anytime.

But Johnny Weir is just too out there for me, whether he is st8, gay or Martian….

  12. Ricky Martin is an attractive sexy hot male. It’s very difficult coming out of the closet if you are Puerto Rican or black. Whites are more open to homosexuality and sexuality in general. Being gay is not easy and I can assure you. I am a black Puerto Rican man. My father hated gays and I guess he was homophobic. He’s dead now, hopefully he’s a peace knowing his only son or child is gay.
