Now You Can Keep Stereotypes In Your Pocket!

My Ty
A new iPhone application debuted last week in the form of MyTy, an animated "pretty, witty, straight talking gay dude with a 'tude". The character is voiced by Dante's Cove actor Charlie David, and just reading the description has me cringing.

"Hey boys and girls! This is Ty speaking … The most fabulous guy EVER!! Some people call me a drama queen, but WHATEVER! Their shoes are ugly and so are they!"

This takes my dilemma of occasionally liking television characters who embody stereotypes to a whole other level. A part of me wants to believe that they're in on the joke, but I really think they're sincerely okay with perpetuating an image of gay men as bitchy queens just so a bunch of women will pay ninety-nine cents so they can be a fag hag.
The worst part? In order to express you're opinion and post a review that this is a hot bag of shit, you'd have to buy the app! Luckily, you can write to the company who developed it and tell them how "unfabulous!" you think this is…

  1. You’re getting upset over this? What a waste of editorial energy, however vacuous.
This is just taking off from that point at which Queer Eye for the Straight Guy ended (minus the virtues).
    Stop taking yourself so seriously.

  2. I agree with Scott…give it a rest, DeWitt. It would be an entirely different story if swishy queens weren’t in abundance, but they do represent a large part of gay culture. You ever attend a gay pride parade lately? Not a great selling point to the public when trying to dispel stereotypes.

  3. And it’s jerks like you Dewitt who make it hard for us gay guys who actually do, unfortunately (by your standards), do embody some gay stereotypes–through no control of our own–to be accepted not just by the straights but also by our own community. Thanks!

  4. I understand what you are saying, Dewitt. The gay community is a diverse group, with the swishy factor ranging all over the map. I’d much rather see an app that reflects the whole community, instead of just one section. From the butch-est boys, to the flamers, there should be an app showing us all.
