First Look At Gay “Modern Families”

The new ABC comedy Modern Family has already some under some criticism for it's portrayal of a gay couple and this sneak peek will either confirm those criticisms, or make you want to watch the show. I'm honestly not sure how I feel because the end of the clip made me chuckle!

The scene is the two gay men bringing home an adopted Vietnamese baby. Some awkwardness and stereotypes ensue… What do you think, hit or miss?

  1. With any new show you are going to see stereotypes, especially at the beginning. It’s the easiest and fastest way to get viewers to ‘know’ the characters. You also can’t study clips and teasers too closely because they are just the tiniest tip of the iceberg of the show. Besides which, when you watch something and then have weeks (or in Glee’s case months) to ‘digest’ it, you start noticing all the negative aspects and thus start tearing it apart because as a viewer the story isn’t moving forward.

  2. Oh dear. I think people are so huffy sometimes. Gays themselves follow gay stereotypes. It’s how we make sense of the world. They didn’t invent the term chubby chaser, we did. Who knows, maybe a gay person wrote that, does that make it ok then?
I didn’t see anything in that clip that made me offended as to how gays were portrayed, in fact it mirrors the idea of how offended we can get over nothing, it brings to light the misinterpretations we all fall to.
In fact, i thought it was a little bit funny in the “it’s awkward in the office interaction sense, painful to watch but slightly funny” sort of way.

  3. Planning on watching it. I can so see hubby being the activist on the plane. Brings to mind a short-lived show from a few years ago, with a gay couple raising a daughter who got married on the sly, and their integrating with the grooms stereotypical Irish-American family of bar owners (don’t remember the name of the show, though). Everyone in my family watched it, and knew immediately which gay dad was me, and which was hubby.
Also kind of poignant, since we were considering adopting at the time.

  4. So I thought it was going to be very stupid from the ads i have seen in magazines, However i did not know it is shot much like a reality type show, or the Office. Hmm seems somewhat interesting. I don’t think they were stereotypical. what do you want them to be? two burly cowboys? please you guys need to stop being asymilationist!
