DADT To Be Repealed This Year?

Ryan Raz, military, gay, DADT, Don't Ask Don't Tell

Fun fact! Porno twink Ryan Raz (pictured above) almost enlisted in the armed services, but he made the decision not to because of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Fellow gays may not need to make such decisions in the near future, as President Barack Obama promised last night to repeal the policy within this year.

Though I wish he had elaborated a bit more on the matter, it's comforting that this is a solid promise with a timeline. Previously, his promises to put an end to the policy seemed quite empty, leaving a big question mark as to when this repeal would be happening. Well, he's got a year to make it happen now. Let's just hope it's sooner rather than later…

  1. Oh and Chris Matthews is a JACKASS!!!! How do you forget someone is black??? I cant forget he’s white or moronic or racist!!!

  2. I don’t think Chris meant it as a racist comment. I think he made a great point, we’ve overcame all of the racial stigma. I applaud him.

  3. I have always wanted to serve, but refused to because of DADT. Now it looks like I need to start considering it again. 🙂

  4. I have been waiting for DADT to be repealed for a long time now. I was removed from active service over DADT in 2000. I never wanted to leave, but I am not holding my breath waiting for Obama to keep his promise.

  5. Actually, Dewitt, he didn’t promise it would be gone this year – he doesn’t have the power to unilaterally determine that. What he said was, he would “work with Congress and our military to finally repeal”… which leaves a LOT of wiggle room. There are quite a few members of Congress who are absolutely opposed to lifting the DADT ban, and it’s possible nothing will actually happen.
To be fair to him, I think he’ll try hard. But whether he is willing to do whatever it takes to get the law repealed waits to be seen.

  6. There was no promise to repeal DADT, if you find his exact comments saying he would repeal please post them, and I will stand corrected. I just heard another vague sentence which is like his previous ones over the year. He has had the power to work on it before but once he is hitting trouble waters he mentions DADT again.

  7. What he needs to do is attach it to next year’s Defense Authorization Budget. That’s how he got the Hate Crimes amendment (dealing with sexual orientation) passed last year. Republicans may piss and moan, but they know there is no excuse for voting against Defense Authorization just because it would kill DADT. They’ll have to take the curds with the milk.

  8. Not that I don’t want DADT repealed, but I’m not going bad mouth him for not making any progress yet. I believe he should make some effort in the four years he has in office, but right now he as a lot of stuff on his plate. I’d prefer he put his effort into the economy and health care reform before trying to tackle DADT as those are affecting a lot more people. I’m probably wrong, but I’m just saying I’d rather he take a little time to do things rather than trying to do everything in the first half of his term.

  9. Nobody has forgotten he is a black man, nobody Chris. Anyways, I would pay to have known what those military men were thinking up front when he said that. They didn’t move a muscle.

  10. I hope it does get repealed. In just under 3 years I’ll have my degree and I can become an Air Force Officer. That gives me about 10 years to become a decorated Officer and then run for the 2024 Presidency.

  11. Marc Ambinder of the Atlantic reports that Obama’s remarks on DADT weren’t just words. Before the SOTU, Obama spoke with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen and had them sign off on the language he used in the SOTU. The Defense Department/Pentagon is actively working on an implementation plan and will be announcing more details next week. Additionally, the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on DADT is set for next Tuesday, February 2. This is the first step in getting DADT repealed.
I would post the link, but last time I tried to post a link, the blog wouldn’t let me. But if you Google Marc Ambinder, DADT, The Atlantic and look for the post dated Jan. 28, 2010, you can see for yourself.

  12. Oh goodness. So many of you completely missed Chris’ amazing point. He’s not a racist. He’s saying the Barack makes race not an issue. Until we stop looking at peoples color and sexuality, it’ll be all we see. I think Chris made a really good point. I’m half black myself and it’s amazing that Barack has been elected to the White House, but ultimately I think people shouldn’t care that he’s black because it doesn’t actually have anything to do with his presidency.
I think the political opinions on this site are so moronic sometimes. Stick to shirtless guys and “how tos” on bumming.
