Aural Only: Clare Maguire

We know trying new things can be kind of scary. Judging from the current numbers on our Weekly Top Ten poll, you have a tendency to favor established pop entities over up-and-coming stars. We don’t blame you or anything. After all, a bit of familiarity can be a good thing… I mean, would you rather hook up with a reliable Manhunt buddy, or brave the waters with a sketchy new prospect? Exactly!

With that said, we’re a little hesitant to introduce you to Clare Maguire. Even though she’s on the same level of talent as Adele or Florence Welch, the UK newbie hasn’t quite crossed over to this side of the pond. Her latest single “The Last Dance” has potential to change that, but we have a feeling the American audience might be slow on the uptake.

Maguire’s vocals have garnered comparisons to Stevie Nicks and Annie Lennox, and she possesses an ethereal presence not unlike Kate Bush or someone else notable who you’d describe as “ethereal”. It’s a rough morning, so we’re not sure if we’re explaining this properly. Let’s just leave it at this–she’s bloody amazing. End of story.

  1. I like it. I’m not such a fan of the remix, didn’t feel like it had the same power as the original.

  2. Thank you so much for putting this up, I’ve been trying to get my friends to listen to her ever since I heard it about a month ago. She deserves to be so successful here, I hope she makes it.

  3. Saw her on sunday in Leeds (uk) SHE IS JUST AWESOME!! has fantastic stage presence and is just a great performer! and!! she is a goddess!!

  4. Cher was what I thought of too. In fact, I kinda hope this track goes nowhere, because it would be a huge hit it Cher recorded it (affirming DeWitt’s observation about established acts.)

  5. Sinead O’Connor meets Katy Perry, and I definitely see the Annie Lennox connection too. I actually like this quite a bit. The original is much better than this particular remix, but a pure, pounding dance remix seems appropriate for a song with this title.

  6. Quite a good song! I don’t think she’s quite got the power of Florence Welch or Adele or near their vocal depth, but her voice is really pretty and distinctive.

  7. She’s awesome. Great track. Thanks for listening to my suggestion. I hope this will keep some people quiet about the countdown having too many divas or pre-fabricated pop stars.

  8. Like it.

I still think you need to put Sarah McLachlan’s new one “Illusions of Bliss” on Aurel Only and see what peeps think about it.

  9. It was about time to have some real singers on here. Love the song. One of the best of the year so far and it also helps to introduce Clare to American audiences.
