Drawn To You: Jason Mecier

Who is this random bearded dude, and what business does he have appearing on the pages of Manhunt Daily? Well, his name is Jason Mecier. You may have seen his pop culture portraits floating around in magazines, on the internet or elsewhere. They’re kind of amazing.

This guy creates hand-crafted mosaics of your favorite (or not so favorite) celebrities, using objects such as pills, jellybeans, yarn and discarded items. Each piece is made with “painstaking care”, and you can tell he has a legitimate admiration for most of his subjects. Check ’em out, and if you like what you see… be sure to head over to his website for more.

  1. I love them, except for the Heath Ledger made out of pills. I mean really, I LOVED Heath Ledger and that is just a bit distasteful.

  2. Seeing the artist’s picture, I was afraid there might be naked pictures of him… which would have sent me back to therapy.

  3. They’re all absolutely fantastic. I scrolled up to try to pick my favourite, but I couldn’t, because each and every one is equally amazing!

  4. JUST WOW!
I would absolutely buy one of these! Either the GaGa one or the Kathy Griffin one.
    They’re fantastic!

  5. Very interesting work. I don’t think the one of Heath Ledger made of pills is in bad taste–the artist is commenting on the relationship between celebrity and the actual person. Ledger’s identity as a celebrity is now inextricably tied up with how he died and the revelation that he had a drug problem. Thus when you look at him, it’s hard to avoid not seeing the drugs that killed him. The same is true of Rosie and her weight.

And kudos to a gay artist for being interested in something other than perfect male bodies, although gay men and celebrity-worship is a little cliche.

  6. Awwwww… Why do we have to have culture? I want sketched pictures of naked guys? *sulks*

Although these are pretty damn cool

  7. These pieces of art are phenomenal!!! I would buy all of them in a heartbeat…if I had tha money of course…lol!!!

  8. These are fantastic! His insight and relationship with the person and the media used are brilliant!

I agree with Bohemond, Heath out of pills isn’t in bad taste, anymore than Rosey O’Donnell in cookies, crackers, and junk food. It is a statement about what we consume ultimately becomes us, amongst other not-so cerebral messages.

And sometimes Art is just Art.

  9. totally got icons – new and old, shocking and heartfelt – brilliant – and themes in people’s lives positive or negative are
    the insightful instincts and naughtiness
of the artist. Great artist. May he have
decades to evolve. So much more artistically pop but with thoughtful edge.
