Would You Hit That?: “Jo Calderone”

The only thing worth paying attention to at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards was Beyonce’s belly, and that’s because rarely has there been a showier way of telling the world you got knocked up. Besides egomaniacal stunts like that to break up the boredom, those awards are a joke. How is MTV giving trophies to videos when they don’t even show them anymore?

Lady Gaga was on hand to perform her new song, and it was the usual performance art piece. She appeared in her male guise, Jo Calderone, and there was a monologue and the usual L.E.S. artiste vibe. When Gaga presented Britney Spears with the big Video Vanguard award, she/he tried to make out with her. Despite sharing a brief “hello” smooch before, Ms. Spears was not down for a tongue-lashing (check the pic below). Gaga would have had more luck if she dropped the drag. Or sent Taylor Kinney in her stead.

So we know Britney’s answer to this question, but what’s yours? When it comes to Lady Gaga’s male alter ego, would you hit that?

  1. I just threw up a lot in my mouth.
If the paparazi get it on film then 1 Gaga 1 guy 1 cup.
    AAARRRRRRRRRR

  2. I thought the VMA show was great, except for the foul mouthed rap “artists.”  Why their every other word has to be the “F” word is beyond my comprehension.  I thought Gaga was fab, if a little bit creepy, and Bruno Mars’ version of “Valerie” was so hot, I needed a cool drink.  I also love Jessie J, whom I actually discovered right here on “Manhunt” when you guys ran her “Do It Like A Dude” video a while back.  Glad to see she has become enough of a bonafide star to play all through the show.

  3. For someone who thinks she’s really into gay issues, Gaga should realize that making a straight woman makeout with you for attention is kinda homophobic. I don’t kiss guys because I want the attention or because I think it’s funny.

  4. NOT EVEN WITH SOMEONE ELSE’S DICK!
There are just some people you should never attempt to visualize in any sexual situation, like Newt Gingrich, Michelle Bachmann, Tom Cruise, Roseanne Barr, our grand parents and now this.
Just gave me the shivers and temporary blindness!

  5. If you actually paid attention to the whole Brittany / GAGA piece it was planned.. Just as they introduced Beyonce and went to cut away you could see the two of them laughing about it and hugged as they left the stage…

  6. I liked it, much better than Garth brooks when he tried to do it years ago, it’s all in fun, lighten up

  7. um, gaga swore just as much as they did! She was bleeped about 10-12 times in her opener and she swore in her acceptance speech

  8. gaga has gone so over the top now that she is losing sight of what she wanted to do. It is no longer about the music, it’s more about how can I top myself and shock people with my antics.

  9. I can’t stand the bitch anymore , would someone make her go away please , please !!!
    gaga makes me caca !

  10. again looks like cher from her walking in menphis vieo..i think every thing she does has all ready been don..poor thang

  11. Yeh, now that you mention it, you’re right.  She was trying to be macho, though, and it was part of her act, while those guys are just illiterate thugs, and if they aren’t, that’s the image they think is cool to put out there, and so that’s how their fans talk too.  Great role models!  NOT.

  12. I’m beyond over Gaga pandering to the gay community. I don’t doubt her sincerity, but does she have to lace EVERY comment with something about gays? If she were gay, it wouldn’t be quite as annoying, but it would still be annoying!!!!

  13. So because it was part of an act, that makes a difference? I don’t think so. She doesn’t need to use foul language to act all macho.

  14. Britney didn’t even want to kiss her, and she will fuck just about anything. So why in the blue hell would I want to give it a try?

  15. did not see the choice…NO…the Lady is good at what SHE does…have no need to fuck her or her “male” alter ego…

  16. She’s acting; they aren’t.  I’m not justifying her language, just pointing out the different intent in its usage.

  17. As an music industry insider, they are acting just as much as she was. There is no difference. There is an image being portrayed by the rappers as well as Gag Gag. You talk to the rappers away from the crowds and they are totally different than when they are in front of the crowds. I’m not justifying them either. I think both are wrong.

  18. even though this woman is a very talented singer/pianist/dancer, she is so derivative of other prominent recording divas that it boggles my mind.  her various ‘creative’ guises have been barely disguised retreads of trailblazing imagery from greater pop divas like grace jones, dale bozio, pat benatar, madonna, bette midler and in this gender/bending instance, annie lennox…just google the eurythmics’ appearance on the 1983 grammy awards or watch their ‘who’s that girl’ video to see where gaga’s “jo calderone” came from…i guess she only steals from the best…too bad all the twentysomethings that worship her have too much cultural amnesia to know better!

  19. I was in the music industry myself for many years as a producer, musician, and talent manager, but it was admittedly before the rise of rap, so if you know those guys and say they don’t talk like that off the stage, I defer to your experience, but I still think they are offensive as role models in their public persona.

  20. I don’t disagree with you, Jimmy. I don’t think they should be role models either. If I had children, they most certainly wouldn’t be watching the VMA’s. And I’d have a tight reign on what they listened to as well.

  21. Yes, everything has been done in music, Gaga is a talented singer songwriter, the reason she does all this shit is because to be successful today you have to do that shit, just like madonna years ago, people want to see theatrics, if you are unattractive and immensely talented you cant make it in music, example Martha Wash, the overweight talented singer whose voice was used for Black Box back in the 80s, her voice lip synched by a svelte hot black woman for the videos
