Mysterious Buggering

Beetle

Gay sex doesn’t lead to procreation, or could it?

In a Journal of Evolutionary Biology study male Beetles (and we’re not talking John Lennon and Paul McCartney) were shown to participate in homosexual activity frequently, and even transfer sperm from male to male. There have been numerous theories about homosexual behavior in all kinds of animals, none of which have found a definitive evolutionary benefit for the behavior.

But the male Beetles who take on the sperm may actually be passing it on to a female. Only 1% of the offspring in the study were produced this way, but it is still a baffling phenomenon. Let’s just be glad it doesn’t work like that for us!
