Although in some parts of the world the story of gay men and women are often tragic, in one small part of China the story of a gay man's family is inspiring. In a culture that's growing rapidly and showing increased signs of tolerance, the story of Sun Mu's coming out is becoming more and more common.
China Daily writes, "When Sun Dehua heard that his only son Sun Mu was gay, he stormed off
to find the young man, kitchen knife in hand. Consumed with intense
anger, he just wanted to kill his son – and himself."
Luckily it didn't happen that way, and a friend of Sun Mu was able to convince his father to accept his homosexual son. With time and increased exposure to other gay individuals, Sun Dehua was able to happily say "they are very nice people." He even purchased a home for his son and partner, who he now considers a second child.
Although this story is still the exception, it serves to show us the increasing tolerance in a rapidly modernizing country.
