The organization we are highlighting this week is the Center for HIV Educational Studies and Training (CHEST), based in New York City. CHEST conducts a different kind of research than many HIV/AIDS organizations; focusing on behavior and psychology in determining how to stop the spread of HIV. In their own words:
"CHEST conducts research on social and psychological factors that contribute to HIV transmission. Studies at CHEST also seek to identify and promote strategies that prevent the spread of HIV and that improve the lives of people living
with HIV. The Center’s current research focuses on
substance use and sexual risk practices of young adults, secondary
prevention efforts among HIV-positive men and women who abuse alcohol
and other drugs, and primary HIV prevention efforts with HIV-negative
gay and bisexual men."
Studying behavior, substance abuse and sexual risk practices is crucial and helps us to understand what drives HIV transmission, and how we all can work to stop it.
