Hot or Not?: Androgyny

From Bowie to Gaga, the public has consistently been fascinated by androgynous individuals. It’s not that surprising! The rules of gender are hammered into our heads from the day we’re born, and it’s only natural that we’re intrigued by those who defy the norm.

Of course, I’m heading into dangerous territory by opening this can of worms. Few can agree on the actual definition of “androgyny”, although it’s traditionally been explained as a mixing of masculine and feminine characteristics. Most folks wouldn’t even throw the picture above into this category. They’d just describe it as a dude wearing high heels and eyeliner.

Alas, we’re not here to debate definitions. Based on your own personal understanding of androgyny, do you consider this an attractive trait in potential sexual partners? Feel free to storm the comments section and weigh in with your thoughts.

  1. Not! For me, being gay means I’m attracted to men, not men who want to be women or who even think it’s fun to dress up as women or act femme.

  2. It’s interesting you posted this because in class we were looking at television culture villains and most of the students in our class were fascinated with HIM from the Power Puff Girls.

He was the most powerful being in the show and he was this effiminate male who wore heeled hooker boots and a dress but at the same time could be really scary. It was good.

That’s about the only androgynous thing I’ve liked.

  3. Nothing sexier than a hint of the other gender in someone who is an extreme one way or the other (goes for both genders). As for true androgyny, it’s a medical problem, but you meant personal style rather than medically.

  4. I would not consider the guy above androgynous….. for me the best way to understand it is to think of those cute skinny lesbians with shaved heads that, from behind, look like skater boys…..

taste-wise I have to say that the older I get (will be 37 soon) the more open I am to all kinds of queerness…. recently ran into a very cute FTM guy on a dating site…. and really thought about it being a possibility, but I was not his type lol

  5. being androgynous myself, it just means to be true to how you really feel – being all natural is what i say, when you don’t put in too much effort into seeming masculine or feminine, you just are.

i remember the first time i had to change my tire, i got alot of burly guys who thought i was a damsel in distress trying to muscle me out of the way so they could do it for me, but i thanked them anyway and change my own damn tire.

  6. to me, androgeny isn’t a combination of male and female sexual characteristics, but the lack of definitive characteristics. And I think that a “beautiful” thin man is very hot!

  7. when it comes to art and fashion, I like the look of androgynous people, purely for the fact that their features intrigue me. But I’ve never been attracted to them sexually. I personally like rough tough men, so it just doesn work. 🙂

  8. Putting on high heels doesn’t make one androgynous. This guy on the picture looks emo, but not androgynous. There are some truly gorgeous androgynous guys out there, Dewitt, couldn’t you put a picture of one of them?! Like Gackt, for example. Now that’s a doll.

That said, I find nothing hotter than an androgynous man.

  9. How heels and androginity are related?? Some guys must be confunding androginity with trasvestism or transgender…

I’m not into guys who dress like girls, but I think that I do like androgines and believe are hot, however are not my favorite think… I think in many guys who are androgins and, well, damn i’ll do them hard.. From that cute babyface boy teen Leo DiCaprio (before scorcese screwed him up) to Michael Pitt, passing from Michael Cera, the guys from MGMT, Juan Son, Rupert Friend, Devon Werkheiser, even older men like Morrisey that spite their masculine bone structure, there still girly things like his eyes, hair and lips, guys with femmenine rasks are gorgeous.

Of course, I love a lot mor a hunky guy or a bear, but if an androgyn comes and ask me to fuck him, I sure will.

  10. I don’t like women (sexually & dating wise) and I don’t want someone who resembles or can be mistaken for a woman and/or “blurs the gender line”

  11. When I was a bit younger about 18 – 20 (before I could grow facial hair and still had a bit of puppy fat on me) even though I always presented myself as a male, because of my really soft features and hair just past my ear, I use to get mistaken for a girl ALL the time.

A few years later, with some facial hair and a gym membership I am more of just a pretty male, rather then androgynous. I think androgyny can be hot if it isn’t intentional.

I find that alot of men love the fact that i’m soft and have a delicate quality to me. I don’t know, but seems to be working 🙂

  12. It’s certainly all right if that happens to be your own particular “thing”, I guess. For my part, it just doesn’t attract me in the slightest.

  13. Depends, i mean, there’s something to be said when it’s in the personality- i love when a really manly looking guy has a few really queeny traits….

I’ve been looking at Jeffrey Starr a lot lately and i find him strangely hot, with pink hair and gender bending clothes… and i previously used to bawk at the thought of going there with someon androgynous….

If we’re talking makeup specifically then that can be really hot, but that tends to be when they makeup still leans towards a manly look more than a feminine one.

If we’re talking about people who are just plain androgynous physically….. i’m not really into guys that look girly (I know you can’t help your genetics, so i’m sorry, but i’m sure there’s a guy out there who will love how you look!!)

Most lesbians i know seem to love a bit of androgyny and most of them i don’t find attractive in any form- a bulldyke is not a hot thing by any means in my eyes, but once again, i’m sure there’s a girl out there who will love those individuals and i wish you good luck.

  14. Its’ all pink inside lol If your hot your hot sexuality and hotness transcends gender, own what you are, If you can pull of a look and still bring sexy to the table and make a guys cock hard then thats the true test.
