England captain Harry Kane will wear a rainbow armband for today’s England vs Germany UEFA EURO 2020 game, it has been announced.
Sharing the news via the national team’s official Twitter account yesterday, a rep said: “@HKane will join @DFB_Team’s Manuel Neuer in wearing a rainbow captain’s armband for tomorrow’s game at @wembleystadium to mark the end of Pride month, as the #ThreeLions stand in allyship with LGBTQ+ communities around the world.” Kane, 27, went on to retweet the post.
Coverage of the England vs Germany game kicks off at 4pm on BBC One today (29 June 2021), with the game starting at 5pm at Wembley Stadium.
The move follows Uefa this month blocking Munich’s Allianz Arena from lighting up in rainbow colours while hosting a Germany vs Hungary game, calling the planned protest against Hungary’s recent introduction of an anti-LGBTQ law ‘political’.
A Uefa rep said in a statement at the time: “Racism, homophobia, sexism, and all forms of discrimination are a stain on our societies – and represent one of the biggest problems faced by the game today.”
“Discriminatory behaviour has marred both matches themselves and, outside the stadiums, the online discourse around the sport we love.”
“However Uefa, through its statutes, is a politically and religiously neutral organisation. Given the political context of this specific request – a message aiming at a decision taken by the Hungarian national parliament – Uefa must decline this request”. Hungary’s law, which is an amendment to legislation on pedophilia, bans positive representation of LGBTQ life to under-18s.
