Gleek Out: Britney/Brittany

How do you combine the two gayest things ever–Britney Spears and Glee? The equation involves John Stamos, a whole lot of fantasy sequences and an epic sex riot. Oh, and I suppose a cameo (or three) by the self-proclaimed “living legend” herself.

In this episode, Kurt pushes to perform a Britney song at a school assembly, but Brittany and Mr. Schuester quickly shoot down the idea. However, both of their minds are changed after an interaction with Emma‘s new dentist boyfriend! It all begins with some anesthesia and concludes with an oddly-placed Paramore song. NEXT WEEK:

I’m A Slave 4 U (Heather Morris): Brittany isn’t very excited about performing Britney. Why? Because her name is Brittany S. Pierce, and she’s been living in the pop star’s shadow for her entire teenage life. This all changes after a bit of dental work…

Personally, I thought they shot their wad too early with this performance. The way Heather Morris moves her body is reminiscent of Britney in her prime, and it could even be argued that she’s an even better dancer. Between the costumes and the choreography, I was loving every minute of this!

And do we even need to talk about the vocal performance? She was singing Britney Spears, not the “Habanera”! As long as she didn’t violate your eardrums, then you really have nothing to complain about. This was all about the visuals.  (5 Points)

Me Against The Music (Heather Morris & Naya Rivera): Even though Santana has perfect teeth, she demands to be placed under anesthesia with Brittany. This leads to a combination fantasy sequence, in which they perform as Britney and Madonna.

Since this is far from the most memorable Britney song, they had a great opportunity to make this better than the original. While Heather Morris rocked the dance moves and Naya Rivera made me question my homosexuality, this didn’t manage to reach a mind-blowing level. Of course, we have to give a bonus half-point for the cameo at the end. It’s just a shame that those two didn’t make out! (4 Points)

Baby One More Time (Lea Michele): When Finn rejoins the football team, Rachel worries that he’ll become too popular and leave her in the dust. She attempts to win him back with a sexier look (inspired by the “Baby One More Time” music video), but her plan backfires due to his jealous feelings.

Visually, this was an excellent recreation of the source material, but something was “off” about this. Given that Lea Michele is a trained vocalist, she didn’t sound at home singing Britney Spears. It’s the same issue I had with her doing Lily Allen’s “Smile”. Her voice is way too strong for this shit.

With that said, I could believe Rachel wanting to be placed in the “Baby One More Time” video. She’d do anything for popularity, fame and acceptance, even if it involves objectifying herself in a slutty schoolgirl outfit. If you haven’t figured it out by now, this girl has an intense hunger for the spotlight. (2.5 Points)

___________________________________________________________

Stronger (Kevin McHale): In Artie’s fantasy sequence, Britney Spears personally tells Tina that she made a mistake by breaking up with him. Then he sings “Stronger” and dances around with a bunch of hot football jocks. That’s all you really need to know.

Honestly, this number seemed a little superfluous. The episode didn’t really delve into the love triangle behind Artie, Tina and Mike Chang, and it seemed wildly out of character for him to even like Britney Spears. I mean, wasn’t he one of the guys who refused to do Lady Gaga? As stereotypical as it would have been, I would have preferred to see a performance by Kurt. (2 Points)

___________________________________________________________

Toxic (Full Cast): After Emma and Kurt accuse him of being too uptight, Mr. Schuester lets the glee club perform Britney at their assembly. The only catch? He’s going to sing with them! Thus, we enter a realm of inappropriate thrusting between student and teacher…

You’re either going to love or hate this arrangement. “Toxic” is one of my favorite Britney Spears singles, so I didn’t really enjoy the choral/rock element of this composition. It also didn’t make sense how this provoked a motherfucking sex riot. Didn’t they do equally racey moves last season, when they performed “Push It”? (3 Points)

___________________________________________________________

The Only Exception (Lea Michele): Yet again, Rachel apologizes for being such an asshole. Are we really supposed to be rooting for her and Finn? They consistently treat one another like crap, and I’m supposed to go “aww” when they kiss and make up? Hell to the no.

Of course, this is a good example of Lea Michele performing a song suitable for her voice. I’ll admit that I hadn’t heard the Paramore version until shortly before the episode’s airdate, so I was able to divorce myself from any comparisons between this and the original artist. Yes, it was totally sappy, but she owned this song like nobody’s business. (4 Points)

BREAKDOWN OF POINTS SYSTEM:

  • 5 Points = Excellent or exceeding expectations in regards to vocal performance, choreography and arrangement. Fits well within the context of the episode, and potentially better than the original version.
  • 4 Points = Not too shabby! May not be entirely on par with the original, but a fantastic effort by the actors and vocalists.
  • 3 Points = Tolerable. Did not induce eye rolls or kept them to a minimum.
  • 2 Points = Could be a variety of factors, including poor song choice or lackluster performance. Boring or uninspired. May be an insult to the original artist.
  • 1 Point = Absolutely painful. Couldn’t wait for it to be over.

  1. I was underwhelmed by last night’s episode. Britney wasn’t written as funny as she usually is (although she can sing and dance). The songs didn’t advance the plot, but were merely performances. (The brilliance of this show in the first half of the first season was that it was a genuine musical: the songs were reimagined as fully in service to the plot. I’d hate to see them lose that.) The Artie/football sequence was the only song that did this. I also wondered why they imported dancers for the Britney numbers (although I enjoyed seeing Mark from SYTYCD). Looks like next week we’ll be back to the best of the show. The second half of the first season got off to a slow start as I recall.

  2. Britney/ Brittany was awesome! Poor Brittany S. Pierce, lmfao! This episode was just full of win! Pretty much loved all of the performances except Rachel’s “One More Time”…sounded really bad. “I’m a Slave for You” was the best, and it just kind of lost momentum from then on. My only gripe was that this episode really didn’t advance the plot whatsoever, and I hope this season isn’t full of filler just for ratings and such.

  3. I love Ryan Murphy, but certain song slections for last night left something to be desired…I feel like a song like Everytime or You Drive ME Crazy could have been used…

  4. Best episode ever!! I mean come on its Britney’s songs what else could you expect beside amazing. I just wish they showed more Brintey. But so far this is my favorite glee episode cant wait for next week. Hopefully they do more Britney songs in the future.

  5. Epic! Perfect! Flawless! Etc, etc, etc.

Best episode yet and as I predicted the show’s highest ratings yet!

    It’s Britney Bitch!

  6. toxic was the highlight number for me this episode. i was disappointed kurt kept pushing to do britney but never got his own solo, but it seems he’ll get his own next week (unfortunately ;_; )

  7. Of course, I guess it helps that Heather is a trained choreographer. She was hired to help with the dance numbers and given her own character afterwards.

  8. To be honest, wasn’t the best episode, only because it didn’t really influence the plot. But from entertaining point of view it was pretty good, since we got to see Brittany dance and sing pretty well. And we had good old Britney songs. And, in my opinion, Toxic and Slave 4 U were the best performances :)) I liked this Toxic version, it was refreshing and pleasant to listen to 🙂 However, Rachel’s voice didn’t really fit “One more time”.

  9. No offense to this show, but isn’t this site supposed to be about gay porn or hot naked men? I realize Glee is the gayest show out there, but it doesn’t seem like it really belongs on this blog.

  10. I thought Brittany had some classic lines in this episode:

“Please don’t pull out all my teeth. I’ll look like an adult baby, but with boobs.”

“This room looks like that room on that spaceship when I got probed.”

“I would just like to say that from now on I demand to have every solo in glee club. When I had my teeth cleaned I had the most amazing Britney Spears fantasy. I sang and dance better than her. Now I realize what a powerful woman that I am… It’s Brittany… bitch.”

    Great stuff.

  11. Gosh this blog is about life in general and porn too… I hate when people complain about non-sex related stories… If you don’t like them don’t click on them…. go to google and just type gay porn if that is all you want.

  12. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE…..GET AWAY FROM SUPPOSED SINGERS LIKE BRITTANY…AND GO BACK TO TRUE SINGERS (EITHER BROADWAY OR OTHERS). IT WOULD BE NICE, EVEN ONCE IN A WHILE, TO FEATURE THE MUSIC OF SOMEONE LIKE DORIS DAY WHO KNEW HOW TO SING AND DIDN’T JUST MOUTH THE WORDS AND SHOW OFF A BELLY BUTTON.

  13. And you weren’t being a b***h, John? Jeff wasn’t. I agree with Jeff. And he said it very nice. Better take a look in the mirror, John N. And I also say that kindly.

  14. John … do what I do. Make every post your own personal would you hit that … then it’s all gay, all porn, all the time 🙂

But no worries, there’s one in every thread that doesn’t like the smooth boys, the no difference between girls, the too hairy, too bear-y, BI posts that don’t like women, etc … you just happen to be the whiner on this thread.

  15. i guess it takes a really SHITTY singer to make britney spears baby one more time sound actually good. poor lea, her voice is amazing, but that song didn’t do it favours.

  16. I quite liked this weeks episode, however I was expecting them to do a few more songs like they did in the Madonna episode and I was expecting a solo from Kurt. That being said, I was absolutely FLOORED by Heathers dancing especially… Like OMG, that girl can move!!! It’s very rare that I am more attracted to a woman who is surrounded by half naked men… She COMMANDED my attention… She got my motors running all sorts of fast…

    I kinda liked some of the songs more than you did though;
    – Slave for U: 5 points
    – Me against the Music: 4 points
    – Hit Me Baby One More Time: 1 point (Leah Michelle should never look like that… And OMG, get rid of that duck faced pout!!!!!!)
    – Stronger: 4 points
    – Toxic: 5 points
    – The Only Exception: 4 points

Stupid Aussie TV though… We don’t get the next episode until the Commonwealth Games are over… Grrrreeeeaaaaat… Like 3 weeks or something??? GRR!!

  17. For me the episode was dull and disappointing. I think it was given too much hype. I wish they would have shown more cast shots during the ‘Toxic’ number. The performance was very sexy and I would have liked to see more of ‘Mike’, ‘Puck’, and ‘Finn’. I assume ‘Puck’ and ‘Finn’ aren’t great dancers but the dance moves didn’t seem that difficult. No doubt Heather Morris can dance, she’s amazing actually! I think ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ might have been better if it wasn’t basically a replica of the music video. No one could think of anything original and creative for that number?

  18. I loved the Brittany episode of Glee. Brit was hilarious! Omg I loved Archie’s version of Stronger. Archie needs to have more imaginary moments when he gets up out of his chair and dances. Last season he was workin’ it at the Mall. I give the episode 4 thumbs up!
