A man involved in a vicious Texas gay bashing was sentenced to 75 years in prison! That's 15 more than most had hoped for and a essentially a life sentence. Bobby Singleton and Jonathan Gunter attacked and hurled gay slurs at 42-year-old Jimmy Dean in July 2008.
Part of Singleton's defense was going to involve pretending he was also gay, as he was caught saying in a jail telephone call: "[I'll] say I'm a faggot, too. Let 'em prove I ain't gay." Hmm… nice try!
His accomplice got 30 years, because Singleton is said to have cause more damage by kicking Dean in the face.

I personally hate this whole hate crime crap – a crime is a crime, all crime, all assaults of any kind are hate crimes. All should be fully prosecuted regardless. Just cuz someone calls someone a fag or a nigger or an indian or whatever … does not make it a worse crime. There is no good reason to assault someone period! What we need are the old days where a posse would round up and do the same + a measure back to those boys. Now talk about a deterrent!

75 years? because? slurs or physically attacking someone or both? if the slurs had anything to do with the sentence, shame! Shame on the attackers in the first place, but to increase the sentence for name-calling? This isn’t kindergarten.
Surgically remove their penises to give them a sense of the psychological damage they have inflicted on their victim.
Am I the only one who finds 75 years excessive? Yes the attack was serious, and possibly life-threatening, but is anyone better off for locking those men up for 30 and 75 years?
I’d have thought the prospect of spending say, 10-15 years in a Texan jail would be deterrent enough to future would-be assailants. The extra 65 years are just a waste of taxpayer money, a waste of human life, and above all excessively cruel -but I suppose that’s what Texan voters want.
To anybody pissed off over hate crime legislation, get a life and a brain..
if somebody “hates” a visible minority enough to attack them once, I can see them being much more likely to be repeat offenders
and I can also see that warranting longer rehab to give them a longer chance to think over their stance versus that minority
But I agree, 75 is overkill. Even 30 is overkill. OK, well, maybe not with the stupid credit system in place, and parole options.
