First-Look Photos from Hulu’s Sexy, Eclectic ‘Fire Island’ Film

When we first heard about Joel Kim Booster’s upcoming project, a rom-com that he was writing based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice but set in Fire Island, it was 2019. Quibi was still a thing and the project was set to go there. It was before the pandemic and the world was different. But the fact is: we were in love with the idea then, and we’re still in love with the idea now.

Now titled Fire Island and morphed into a feature film, the idea is now a Hulu project. Still set in Fire Island Pines, it “centers around two best friends who set out to have a legendary week-long summer vacation with the help of cheap rose and a cadre of eclectic friends,” according to a release. The movie is set to launch June 3.

“It’s such a coocoo place,” Booster wrote to Out of the project back in 2019. “Specifically The Pines and Cherry Grove (two hamlets on the island) [are] such an interesting lens to view the various manufactured social classes gay men have constructed for themselves – whether it’s body image, race, or literal economic class.”

“I’m approaching it in the same way Amy Heckerling approaches Clueless, which was an adaptation of Emma,” he continued. “I’m trying to strike the right balance of honoring Austen’s work without being so slavish that I’m unable to tell an authentic story about modern gay men.”

The cast is full of buzzy names. Booster and Bowen Yang star as best friends. Conrad Ricamora, Matt Rogers, Margaret Cho, James Scully, Zane Phillips, Tomas Matos, and Torian Miller.

Expect hook-ups, dramatic friendships, and general debauchery. Spa Night‘s Andrew Ahn directed the movie.
