Doctor Who Is Officially Gay According To Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris recently completed filming his part for the upcoming season of Doctor Who and he spilled some juicy tea that queer fans of the iconic sci-fi series are about to get very excited over.

According to Harris, the new version of the Timelord, played by Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa, is a member of the LGBTQ+ family. “I got to meet and interact with him a bit and he’s glorious,” Harris told Variety speaking about Gatwa. “He’ll be the first gay Doctor, which is going to be super cool, a sexier Doctor.”

While the series did previously reveal a same-sex attraction between the Doctor as portrayed by Jodie Whittaker and her companion, Yaz Khan (Mandip Gill), this could mark the first time that the Timelord could be out and proud about their sexual orientation.

Also appearing on this season is Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney as Rose in the upcoming 60th anniversary special. “You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set,” showrunner Russell T. Davies previously said in a statement. “We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world — and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”

As for who Harris is playing, it’s currently unconfirmed but rumored that the Uncoupled star will be appearing as The Toymaker, a powerful being who traps people with childish games, putting their freedom on the line. He of course cheats. It’s always fun to see Harris play the villain, but we’ll have to wait for the upcoming 14th season to find out if the rumors about the casting are true.

In the meantime, Doctor Who fans have the Centenary Special to look forward to in October. The special will mark Whittaker’s final (feature-length) episode as the Doctor and many hope will finally see Yaz and the Doctor have the romance that’s been teased.

Gatwa’s Doctor will make his highly anticipated debut in 2023.
