Censorship At Its Best?

Eminem, performing, music, CD release, Relapse

Rapper Eminem will be headlining the UK's Wireless Festival in Hyde Park, under one condition–his anti-gay lyrics need to go. Before he could be confirmed as a performer, event organizers had to strike a deal with gay rights activists from OutRage! The organizers wanted to avoid any major disruptions, after the group picketed outside Eminem's 2001 tour dates.

Now I wouldn't normally endorse censorship, but I'm totally behind this move. How do you feel about it? Though ideally Eminem would stop spitting homophobic lyrics in general, this seems like all we're going to get for now.

  1. With all due respect, backing censorship only when it agrees with your principles and worldview is something of a double-standard. If the Wireless Festival doesn’t want to deal with Eminem, or the consequences of his appearances, they can simply not invite him.

  2. the beauty of Eminem is that he makes fun of everyone equally, get over it, censorship is never a good thing, if you dont like it, dont listen to it

  3. Eminem does not make fun of “everyone equally.” I don’t think I’ve heard him call Beyonce a “Jungle Bunny” yet. He’s never been accused of any anti-black language and he tends to suck up to his backward-baseball-cap-wearing-wigger audience in most of his songs.
But he’s a total coward. on his new album he calls out Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert and then calls them “fake its” except he pronounces it “faggots.”
Little cry baby wouldn’t even show up at the Oscars because they wouldn’t allow him to have his 5 body guards.
    Fuck him.

  4. its just words…my god…unless the words come out of someones mouth to bitchslap me i’m totally ok with it…i bet deaf gays are having the time of their lives while the ones who can hear stress about he said she said…just words…

  5. You appear to endorse censorship only when it somehow serves your interest. Is that why you’re censoring my comments on one of your other blog entries?

  6. I love Em and have never been offended by his lyrics. I can’t really recall any outright hateful lyrics of his towards gays. If EM were hot would your opinion still be the same?

  7. Censorship is fine and moral when implemented by private citizens or corporations with respect to their own resources. It is immoral only when the sole protector of individual rights (the government) is the censoring party.
I.e. It’s fine if I censor language in my own home, my business, or with regards to my publications, etc, but government’s only legitimate role is to protect individual rights. Clearly it cannot protect individual rights by oppressing people through censorship. And, “right and wrong” is not subject to popular opinion.

  8. (Please don’t mistake me for a Republican.)
Um, actually, technically, this ISN’T CENSORSHIP. This is an agreement to perform in a specific way… like when you make Uncle Mel promise that he won’t tell any hamster jokes before you invite him to holiday dinner. (It’s also no different from the standard technical rider forms that performers use to specify that they must have, eg., a specific microphone or PA setup, or a bowl of only green M&Ms backstage.)
Banning CDs, barring performances in a region, or blocking web pages would be an act of censorship. This isn’t. This is market forces at work: enough people made their voices heard that the Wireless Festival organizers decided it’s worth more to have Eminem agree to not use certain lyrics as part of his agreement to perform.

  9. Wow,if you don’t like what he says,,,then don’t listen to him!!!!Life is way to short to get upset over this sort of thing.
    GO GAY!!!

  10. Mickhuck appears that U have issue with Eminem and his anti gay lyrics but no problem with using the term jungle bunny. U cannot have it both ways he is no less ignorant than U R !!! 4 those who have a problem with Eminem music ( I don’t ) instead of censoring it DON’T BUY IT !!!

  11. this is stupid, seriously forcing someone to edit themselves for the sake of one organization is wrong. I would only be okay with this if he was told he couldn’t say any hurtful things towards any group of people. It is disrespectful on so many levels in my opinion. I’m not a fan of his but still feel that he should have the right to perform whatever he wants and how he wants as long as he isn’t causing any physical harm to anyone.
This is the problem with the world today, you have to bow down to certain groups cause they are able to have their voices heard but the groups that aren’t being heard are completely ignored

  12. ec2031 I read his comments several time and if anyone missed the point ec2031 U did !!! He only refered 2 Beyonce as a jungle bunny and used phrase wigger audiance,ec2031 U say I missed the point ?

  13. He only said that Eminem has never called her that. He wasn’t calling her that himself. Learn to read.
