Aural Only: Rihanna

Rihanna, Rockstar_101, new single, music video

The idea of Rihanna being a "rock star" is pretty fucking ridiculous. Sure, she has a lot of tattoos and wears black, but does that put her in the same category as Mick Jagger and Kurt Cobain? Well, not quite. Yet her latest single "Rockstar 101" would attempt to convince you otherwise. And she'd probably give you the middle finger if you didn't agree.

For the fifth music video from Rated R, the Bajan pop star has opted to release one of the least commercial songs from her album. We're not sure what inspired this move, but are we wrong to think that this would sound really awesome playing in a strip club?

  1. crap.
what does it have to do with rock anyway?
    i can’t hear guitar much.
some electronic guitar in the chorus, but that’s like saying Umbrella was also a rock song, cos there was electronic guitar in the chorus.
Britney did a much better job as a rockstar.
    I love rock’n’roll was great ^^

  2. I think she totally ripped off Raven look, outfit, attitude from Rue Paul’s Drag Race’s rock challenge.
    The bitch should sue!

  3. Rated R is an album which I’m trying to let grown on me, but aside from “Hard” & “Rudeboy” it still isn’t (“Russian Roulette” was OK)! Honestly, if her next album doesn’t take her back to her pop roots, or even “Umbrella” era RiRi, I doubt she’ll be revelant much longer. Someone needs to let her know that just because she took a beating doesn’t mean her music has to take one as well!

  4. Don’t take it so literal. Alot of pop singers do a version of rock. MJ, Janet, Britney, it’s more about the image than proclaiming actually being a rocker.

  5. Rated R has been a HUGE disappointment. The singles have not been good at all. No fun anywhere to be found.
With Rockstar it feels like we are waiting for the entire song for it to actually start and kick in, but it never does.

  6. I don’t care if she has scored as many Top 10’s as Beyonce, since 2000. This dimwit couldn’t sing her way out of a paper bag.

  7. I love Rated R. But I like growth in artists, not like most gays who want the same thing over and over. (I guess that’s why Britney does so well.)
I love this song, I hate that the U.S. is so lame and they had to cut out “check my panties and my bra.” Seriously? Lame.
And no way in hell did Britney do rock better.

  8. I dont know what everyone problem is but this video is BADASS!! I love Rihanna whole new style. She is just a sexy bitch! 😉
@Kevin at least Rihanna make videos worth watching and not the same shit over like Beyonce.

  9. Rihanna, baby, stop with this weird shit!!
Im one of your biggest fans, please get back to the Rihanna we loved. Music of the sun was one of your best! This look just isnt you at all. The song kicks ass but im not digging the video!
Oh and MR.Ke$haSpears dont HATE on my girl BEYONCE she is the best in the business! PERIOD! All the other girls want to be in her shoes!

  10. i like the song, its kinda fun.
wish her and breezy nothing but success since that mess last year or w/e…
she should tone down the sex crap though. would prefer seeing more of rihanna’s earlier persona.. but she’s still a great talent just like chris and look forward to seeing what else they have in store.

  11. The best rock outfit I’ve ever seen for a popstar has to be Janet, back in 2001 when she did “Trust a Try.” If that song became a single it would have been huge. But this song is horrible. Rated R is, to me, bad. I only like “Rude Boy” and “Wait Your Turn” and the serious songs aren’t good (I was expected a “Velvet Rope”).
