Aural Only: Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding, Guns And Horses

When Ellie Goulding first stormed onto the pop scene, her lack of standard pop star qualities was oddly refreshing. She was nothing more than a random blonde girl who liked to sing. Her style was subtle and understated, greatly contrasting with the over-the-top glamour of Lady Gaga or Rihanna. It's almost as if she intentionally threw a middle finger up at the industry, saying, "Damnit, I've got a voice in me. And I'm going to showcase it while wearing flannel shirts."

As Goulding releases her third single "Guns And Horses", one has to wonder if her schtick is growing tired. Music video after music video, we've watched her stand around making grand gestures with her hands and occasionally throwing in an awkward dance move. With back-up dancers, special effects and editing this all creates something worth watching, but there's a point where her insufficient amount of presence will start to become an issue.

With that said, "Guns And Horses" is actually a fantastic song. It's nowhere near as exciting as Goulding's first release "Under The Sheets", but then again, what really is? Hopefully, she can pull it together and avoid the risk of becoming a parody of herself. But if she continues to turn out songs this good, we might be able to forgive her dramatic hand motions…
