Album Review: Dru Hill

No one could take Sisqo seriously after the “Thong Song”. Frankly, most of the world wouldn’t have minded forgetting him after that ridiculous ode to ladies with whale’s tails, but unfortunately his solo ventures had the adverse effect of damaging the very group that launched his career.

While Dru Hill had a string of R&B hits in the late ’90s, the Naughty Aughties haven’t been too kind to the group. They achieved very minor success back in 2002 with Dru World Order, but they still failed to capture the magic that made them so successful in the first place.

If there’s anything good about their latest project InDrupendence Day, it’s that they were able to recapture that magic. Well, at least for one track. “Back To The Future” is a sweeping ballad that could take a place in their greatest hits catalogue next to “5 Steps” or “These Are The Times”. Although it’s nothing new or groundbreaking, it’s certainly an outstanding slice of ’90s R&B nostalgia.

The only problem? The rest of the album finds them stuck in the ’90s in a bad way, complete with dated production and bland lyrical content. The group even dabbles in the ’80s with their own rendition of Tears For Fears‘ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”! Let’s just say it’s not their best piece of work.
