Album Review: Congratulations by MGMT

Mgmt - congratulations

In this fast-paced digital age, it's practically pointless for musicians to devote their time and energy towards creating a cohesive album that flows effortlessly from one track to the other. Why even attempt such a feat when most listeners are just going to put their iPods on shuffle and ignore the intended sequencing?

Brooklyn-based duo MGMT doesn't seem too phased by this on their new album Congratulations. The nine songs on the tracklist actually sound best when listened to from start to finish. Overall, the project is much stronger as a whole than their debut full-length Oracular Spectacular, but many listeners will express disappointment over the glaring omission of addictive dance tracks like "Electric Feel" or "Kids".

In their place, you have songs like "Siberian Breaks", a twelve minute psychedelic romp that's essentially four or more songs rolled into one. Has the band given up on commercial success in favor of maintaining their musical integrity? Or have they just completely lost their minds? It's impossible to say, but hopefully they'll keep doing whatever it is they're doing.

  1. Big fan of this album!!
A much braver sound. Blog assholes are expecting Kids Pt 2 – but, this is such an impressive album from MGMT!

  2. This album is badass. For those of you that appreciate risk-takers in music, this is definitely an album to look into.
Another suggestion: Broken Social Scene’s “Forgiveness Rock Record” just leaked today.
