AIDS and Gay Porn to Blame for Brazilian Waxes?

Waxing

If you've ever wondered what lies behind the Brazilian wax phenomenon, I bet the rise of AIDS and gay porn in the 1980's didn't come to mind. Or maybe it did, in which case you'd be happy to hear Carmine Serracino's theories.

Serracino, the co-author of The Porning of America: The Rise of Porn Culture, What It Means and Where We Go From Here, says, "Women now shaving or getting rid of pubic hair comes directly from
pornography in the 1980s. It started with gay porn. This was shortly after the outbreak of AIDS. Some filmmakers
thought it was a cleaner look for men. Once the gay porn stars started doing that, it slipped over to heterosexual movies."

This column by Jenice Armstrong goes on to discuss the waxing trend in further detail, and although it comes off as over-analyzation the gay-porn theory proposed by Serracino is at least worth a look.

So who do others think? Does gay-porn actually have what it takes to influence the mainstream in any way or is Serracino off his rocker?
