10 Non-Porn Films I Would Very Much Like To See

From I Want Your Love to Weekend, queer cinema is moving beyond the bad reputation established from the crap they’ll play on Logo. I myself have fallen victim to the idea that all gay movies are downright atrocious and full of bad stereotypes, so I will be using TLAgay‘s 25% off Memorial Day weekend sale as an opportunity to broaden my horizons and explore the world beyond Another Gay Movie. (Not that I’m judging you if you enjoyed Another Gay Movie. Except, yes, I am.)

Here’s a list of ten titles I’m interested in. If you happen to have suggestions or would like to speak out against any of the movies listed, I’ll be happy to read through what you have to say and take it into consideration when making my final decision. This isn’t my tricky way of getting you to comment. I’m genuinely interested in your opinion, especially as someone who doesn’t specialize in film.

Check out trailers for ten non-porn films I’d like to see below:

Bad Boy Street

BAD BOY STREET: I don’t actually know very much about prolific queer filmmaker Todd Verow, but I can tell you a few things about his 2012 film Bad Boy Street1) It has an excellent rating on TLAgay, 2) It takes place in Paris and centers around an intergenerational romance, and 3) The male leads could both get approximately 9,198,731 rimjobs from me.

BOTTOM: You know how when someone tells you to NOT do something, it occasionally makes it all the more appealing? That’s how I feel about watching BOTTOM (also from filmmaker Todd Verow). The documentary, which details the confessions of a self-proclaimed bareback cunt, has been described as “disgusting” and “repulsive”, yet this only makes me want to see it even more.

The Men Next Door

Mark Cirillo full-frontal nudity, cock shot

THE MEN NEXT DOOR: This one’s a light-hearted comedy that I’d watch while nursing a hangover on a lazy Sunday afternoon. You can judge me all you want, but hey, it’s better than watching Tia and Tamera Mowry (again) in Double Wedding. The premise of this film is equally ridiculous, when the male lead falls in love with the guy next door… And his father! Hilarity ensues.

Oh, and there’s also full-frontal male nudity. That helps.

Sexual Tension: Volatile

SEXUAL TENSION: VOLATILE: Okay, so this one might not be far off from porn! Sexual Tension: Volatile is a beautifully-shot series of six erotic vignettes from Argentinian filmmakers Marco Berger and Marcelo Mónaco. According to TLAgay, this one played to packed audiences at Philadelphia’s QFest, to the point that they had to turn people away at the door. If the title alone isn’t enough to intrigue you, maybe this will help:

“A pulsating, sexually-charged thrill ride, the film begins as a young man feels the adrenaline rush of his sexy tattooist’s needle in ‘Ari’ while in ‘The Cousin,’ a geeky, cute boy finds a hot Summer afternoon triggering his taboo desire for his Speedo-clad cousin. Two straight buddies literally show each other how to make love to a woman in ‘The Other One,’ while a man with ‘Broken Arms’ receives a sensual sponge bath from a male nurse. ‘Love’ is questionable when a broken shower brings a married man and a hairy, innkeeper together when they least expect it and in ‘Workout’ two muscular men, ‘sexting’ pictures to some hot chicks, begin to shed their clothes and inhibitions.”

YOSSI

Yossi

YOSSI: This film would probably require seeing the original (and apparently rather tragic) Yossi & Jagger. I’m okay with that! Actor Ohad Knoller has this Russell Crowe meets Gerard Butler appeal that works for me, and I’d watch pretty much anything if it meant I’ll get to see his butt… And, on a less revoltingly shallow note, this looks like a legitimately good film! Really. I promise it’s not all about his butt.

How-to-survive-a-plague

HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE: I got teary-eyed while watching this trailer, which tells the story of “the brave young men and women who successfully reversed the tide of an epidemic, demanded the attention of a fearful nation and stopped AIDS from becoming a death sentence”. I’m a sucker for a documentary about people fighting for what’s right, and this seems right up my alley.

(See? All of these aren’t about butts.)

Sagat film, documentary

SAGAT: A documentary about iconic gay porn star François Sagat? YES PLEASE! Again, this might break the “non-porn” rule to some extent, but I’m genuinely interested about learning what makes this man tick. Cameos by Dean Monroe and the late Wilfried Knight are only icing on the cake.

(This one is all about the butt.)

JOSHUA-TREE-1951-Poster

A PORTRAIT OF JAMES DEAN: JOSHUA TREE 1951: Oh, how I long for the Hollywood of yesterday, before TMZ and Lindsay Lohan’s lack of panties! This bio-pic starring James Preston—not to be confused with Marc Jacobs‘ ex-boyfriend, Jason Preston—could either be a disaster or a huge win, but I’m willing to take the risk.

Gun Hill Road

GUN HILL ROAD: Esai Morales stars as a father who struggles to accept his male-to-female transgender daughter. Actress Harmony Santana (known for her roles in the insipid Eating Out series) shows off her range with an emotional performance, which gained her several award nominations. Color me intrigued.

I’M A STRIPPER: The real-life version of Magic Mike? Okay. I’m with it.

  1. I’M A STRIPPER: Was on Logo for their Documentary series they are doing. While it was okay it is not a good DVD buy if you ask me once was enough seeing it.

  2. Benjamin Bratt is an Alcoholic Chicano Single Father in San Francisco that enjoys making low-rider cars and finds out his son is gay. Some serious sad parts in the movie but pretty realistic in how they are trying to learn to live and love each other and deal with what life keeps tossing their way. The son in this movie is like WOW!

  3. The Men Next Door is adorable.. with ALL sorts of sexy mens.. sure, the acting is pretty crappy as well as the bland scenery and “uh oh” moments, but it’s still a nice lazy afternoon movie to watch with your boyfriend or your hag…

  4. Thanks to you too! I was on the fence about that one, but you might have pushed me to grab a copy.

  5. I’M A STRIPPER: had a misleading premise on Logo, there was only straight strippers in that show.

  6. Check out Before the Fall. It’s a WWII piece set in Nazi Germany. No homoerotic action happens, but the tension and relationship goes deeper than friendship.

  7. I have that BOTTOM documentary, it’s very graphic though I was annoyed by the voice masking, i had to mute while watching it.

  8. A Portrait of James Dean is fucking teeeeeeeerrrrrrrible. Promise. There’s a couple of hot scenes with the lead actor but ultimately a waste of time.

  9. Enjoyable without the sound? Like, are there subtitles? I’d feel weird watching without any sound, but I guess I could… Um, play classical music in the background?

  10. Yup there are subtitles because the guy’s voice is so digitally altered that it literally hurt my ears.

  11. Great post, Dewitt. Nice job on the branching out. You have certainly brought some movies to my attention that I would have definitely missed otherwise. I really like the preview of Sexual Tension…seems kinda sexy without being raunchy.

  12. Interesting. I’ve never really given gay cinema a chance, but I’ll check out one or two of these titles to expand my horizons.

  13. mmm… I don’t know how you feel about subtitles (or if you speak spanish), but these are some of the “not so bad” spanish “gay themed” comedies:

20 Centimeters (I especially liked this one)

  14. Shelter is a great gay film. I found the emotions the main character portrays were very real to my feelings when I was coming out. Definitely give it a look!
