The Boys of McFly Get Gay… Again.

I’m not sure this is a news-flash, exactly, but it seems like boy bands, in the style of James Franco, are trying to stay relevant by outdoing themselves… each other… someone…(?) in the sexual ambiguity stakes more than they ever have before. Buzzfeed currently features an exhaustive post at the moment called “46 Times Harry Styles And Louis Tomlinson Proved They Belong Together” which, as the title suggests, lists 46 separate GIFs that show a kind of unmistakable affectionate love that exists between One Direction band members Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.

Not to be outdone by the massive, relentless, global, omnisexual flirt that is the primary marketing tool of One Direction, boy band veterans McFly have returned (yet again) to the pages of Attitude magazine in the UK for a photo shoot to mark their tenth anniversary, and the images are of them hanging out together camping. (Ha! Get it? Camping!) That’s right, they’re all hanging out in a tent, in various stages of undress, getting uber quasi-gay with each other.

What’s happening here? As in, in the world? Is it safe to assume that we’ve reached a point in pop culture where the task of marketing themselves and their bands is, for young male pop stars, really just one enormous, international gay-off? Yes, I think it is, and you know what that means?

It means that if we, the gays, just sit back and act like we don’t care that much, they’ll keep taking it one step further until they get so desperate that they all end up releasing high quality sex tapes with brand new soundtracks to go with them – composed by the boys themselves. It’d be like M83’s project with the Tom Cruise film, Oblivion, or Björk’s work with Lars von Trier in Dancer in the Dark – although, obviously, it’d be less “terrible” and soul crushingly sad (respectively) and more light, boyish and hot. So, okay… Nobody move. Let’s just see how far we can take this.
