A Brief History Of Gays On TV

From 1984's Celebrity miniseries to the current ABC drama Brothers and Sisters, we gay men have had a long history on television (kinda). From the evil gay to the comic-relief and everything in between, this YouTube video gives us a brief history of gays on television.

I still remember, and they seem to have forgotten, a young Hayden Christensen coming out on some random soap opera. Whether listed or not, What is your favorite gay TV character?

  1. The first one really demonised Gay relations. That kid should not be looking though windows the peeping Tom.

  2. Is this clip from a show on Logo or here! TV? If so, I wouldn’t mind seeing the whole thing. This is a nice recap of some of the more memorable ones, but there a quite a few absences, notably the first (I think) made-for-TV movie starring Tony Randall as a gay man, “Love, Sydney”, or the later “An Early Frost”.

  3. Actually, it was Ryan Phillippe whose character came out on ‘One Life to Live’ in the early 90s; they still feature gay characters pretty regularly (Oliver, Kyle, Nick, Amelia).

  4. It seems 2 me that a gay character in a main stream television show is a guarantee success where as not 2 long ago it would have been consider taboo ………..

  5. Id be more interested in seeing Lesbian portrayal in media because while a gay character is promised ratings, I can only think of a few Lesbian characters in Primetime media. And I don’t mean the simple girl kiss girl ratings booster.

  6. Definitely John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood!! And he’s married to his partner Scott Gill. 🙂
