8 Pop Songs You Won’t Care About Unless I Put The Word “DICK” In The Title

Fucking Boulangerié Knowles! I’ve been trying to get you guys to care about Bright Light Bright Light for over a year now. Then, she goes and makes some bullshit post about his “DICK”, and it gets twice the amount of traffic than any piece I’ve written about him. It’s almost enough to make me want to quit writing about music and leave that territory in the reigns of Boulangerié, Gay Evan, Gay Skylar and Gay Duncan.

::extremely loud sigh to indicate how frustrated I am::

Oh well, I suppose I’ll give this one more shot… Since I’ve spent most of my week listening to Dev Hynes‘ “Chamakay” and the new Drake album, I’ve opted to branch out and focus on some full-fledged lady-pop tunes for today. There are a few songs here I genuinely love, along with a smattering of guilty pleasures and tracks I thought you might enjoy. Leave a comment and let me know which (if any) you were feeling. I’m also open to new musical suggestions, because seriously, I will die if Gay Duncan continues to play “Work Bitch” on repeat.

Listen to five recent pop releases below:

Sky Ferreira – “You’re Not The One”:

Sky Ferreira‘s debut full-length album has been delayed for years now, but now, it’s allegedly scheduled for release next month. Producer Ariel Rechtshaid, who co-wrote and co-produced her previous single “Everything Is Embarrassing“, is responsible for at least six of the album’s tracks (if not all of them). This should be a good sign, given that the lead single “You’re Not The One” is one of Ferreira’s finest efforts to date.

Jennifer Hudson f/ T.I. – “I Can’t Describe (The Way I Feel)”:

For her own official releases, Jennifer Hudson has never been given a song that measures up to her vocal ability. “I Can’t Describe (The Way I Feel)” follows that trend with its restrained disco vibe, but producer Pharrell Williams still managed to craft a fun, classy offering that’s a welcome addition to Hudson’s repertoire. Meanwhile, known dick-wad T.I. contributes a verse, which is a strange pairing for a singer with such a huge gay following.

Shishido Kavka – “Love Corrida”

I know very little information about Japanese singer, drummer, model and actress Shishido Kavka, aside from what I learned from quickly going here (which was, um, mostly that she’s a Japanese singer, drummer, model and actress). However, “Love Corrida” is one of the most inventive pop-rock tunes I’ve heard in a long time.

Ke$ha – “Meet Me In Space”:

Diehard Ke$ha fans have started a campaign to “free” her from her eight-album contract with hit-maker Dr. Luke. For some reason, this unfinished version of her track “Meet Me In Space” has become one of the anthems for this movement, causing casual Ke$ha fans like me to scratch our heads in confusion… Because, well, this sort of sounds like everything else she does? Not that this is a bad thing, necessarily.

Zedd f/ Hayley Williams of Paramore – “Stay The Night”:

To be completely upfront, I really don’t mind Zedd‘s “Clarity“. It hasn’t won me over in the same way Calvin Harris or other dance music DJs have in the past, but it’s far better than the crap David Guetta churns out these days. Although “Stay The Night” doesn’t do much to convert me to Lord Zedd’s team, it’s nice to see Paramore‘s Hayley Williams branching out to the EDM department.

Cher – “I Hope You Find It”:

Yes, Cher is covering a Miley Cyrus song. And it’s not terrible.

Cher Lloyd f/ T.I. – “I Wish”:

I’m almost ashamed by how much I adore Cher Lloyd‘s “I Wish”. Better yet, I’m almost ashamed by how much I adore Cher Lloyd. The British pop tart falls back onto her trademark bratty delivery for her latest, but there’s a sweeter touch of the “I’m a pretty girl complaining about not being pretty enough” method that Taylor Swift‘s so famous for (along with a nice dash of Skee Lo‘s hip-hop classic “I Wish“). Once again, known dick-wad T.I. contributes a verse.

Charli XCX – “SuperLove”:

The first time I listened to Charli XCX‘s “SuperLove”, I got a bit of a retro Gloria Estefan or Kylie Minogue vibe. It’s extremely peppy and upbeat, yet still manages to retain a bit of the grit that the up-and-coming indie pop star’s become associated with. I’m on board. Are you?

  1. PLEASE continue to post about music, and leave “B.K.” to stand for “Burger King” as it rightfully should.

  2. I’d say I like about half of what you recommend, but amongst that half I’ve found precious gems to add to my music library.
So… don’t stop, everything those others post about I can “discover it” just taking a look at what my friends post on their facebooks… all of them, one after the other… sharing… resharing… redosharingthesharing…

  3. They need to stop trying to make Sky Ferreira happen. Her songs never have any redeeming quality aside from the beat and you can’t make boring or mundane pop. That goes against the nature of the genre.
