Would You Let That Hit You?: Chris Brown

This post isn’t a joke. I was infuriated last night when Chris Brown trotted onstage to accept the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, thereby defeating a roster of artists which included Ledisi, Kelly Price, El DeBarge and R. Kelly (the latter of whom would not be much better)… Oh, and the standing ovation after his performance? I nearly threw my remote at the television screen.

Frankly, I wasn’t going to write about the Grammys, solely because I’d be promoting a program that allowed this to happen. A program that referred to themselves as “victims”, because they had to refrain from promoting Brown for a few years.

But then I saw this.

Yes, this is a list of twenty-five (mostly) young women saying Chris Brown’s so sexy and/or talented that they’d let him punch them in the face. This is more disturbing than anything that happened during last night’s show. You can argue all day that people need to move on and everyone deserves a second chance, but what did Brown do to deserve that second chance? Make a few hit songs for a fanbase who’d willingly let him beat them ’til they bleed?

I’m sorry. Disagree with me all you want. This is not okay.

  1. As a child I was witness to my mother being beat up and hospitalized. I think it is really disturbing that we are actually encouraging this type of behavior. Equally disturbed that so many young girls are volunteering to be his punching bag online, just because he is famous. What is wrong with these girls? What is wrong with us that we make light of a situation that could result in serious injury and ten death. PLEASE STOP!!

  2. I’d let him hit me, that way I would have a reason to beat the shit out of this piece of human garbage, the fact that people accept this pice of shit and applaud him ,shows how fucked up this culture is and anyone that routes for this guy is just as low as he is.

  3. I kept hoping he would fall off the set and land flat on his douchebag face…  he makes me sick…

  4. Grammies to Rihanna: just sing, dance, be pretty, be sexy, and STFU about anything else.  Neither your feelings nor your personal safety are of any concern to us whatsoever.  Yes, we have issues.

  5. If the abuse was one isolated incident and not continuous, like many relationships, then I don’t think he should be condemned for the rest of his life. Yes, it was a stupid mistake, one that will leave a dent on his reputation throughout his career, but everyone needs some forgiveness. As for most of you, I’m sure if you met your favorite celebrity (or just any guy you thought was ‘hot’ enough), you would probably let the guy do whatever he wanted to you

  6. haha! i’d forgotten about that peen pic. But NO, he is a joke… sometimes the grammy’s seem less and less prestigious.

  7. I can’t believe this guy still has a career after what he did. When the story of what he did to Rhianna first broke, one of the first things I thought was, ‘well at least his career is over’. Only as asshole would support it by buying his music or voting for him for an award. Fuck you, Chris Brown! I’d like to see you try and take a shot at me some time.

  8. The only saving grace of distastfulness of his win was his acceptance speech being followed by Taylor Swift performing “Mean” and the roaring reception she got.  Touche!

  9. The worst part of it all is that there has not just been the one violent episode… His behaviour has been repeated. He’s thrown chairs through windows, gone nuts and deleted his twitter account after gay slurs… he’s hardly redeemed himself at all.

  10. someone should call peta… looks like a monkey has been tattoo’d
ugly mofo looks like evolution skipped his family tree

  11. Hypocrite much? Why such venom for this 22 yr old guy who made a HUGE mistake? Yet continue to post and mention him throughout the year? Either get over it or just  stop mentioning his name all together. You find him vile, yet good enough to post his dick pics or his music?

  12. I am not promoting domestic abuse but realistically 38 percent of men abuse their wives or girlfriends, Chris brown is very talented, that has nothing to do with his private demons, look at Michael Vick and the heinous things he did and he’s back making millions again, just saying…..

  13. I suspect that most of the people in the entertainment business know what a short-tempered, arrogant, egomaniacal bitch Rihanna is and wonder why it took so long for somebody to finally go off on her. He just happened to be the one that finally did it!!!

  14. I was at The Grammys last night. The producer Ken Erlich comes out at the beginning of the show and sometimes during commercial break and instructs the Floor Audience to get up on their feet regularly to make it high energy for TV. I’m not saying people weren’t genuinely entertained by his Qbert show, but the producer does push the audience between sets.

  15. soot, I find your comment to be racist by referring to a black man as a monkey. History has shown, whites have referred to us as monkeys and coons. Would you refer to Chris Brown as an monkey, if he were white?

  16. I agree, Rhianna is no Saint. She conducts herself like a slut and West Indian trash. She has been an positive imagine in the black community and for young black girls. I can’t stand this witch. She’s lacking class. She can learn from Diana Ross, Dionne Warrick, and Diane Carroll how to be a lady with class.

  17. As I watched Chris Brown performance I kept thinking the whole time that this kid has not learned a thing  and I am just waiting 4 the other shoe 2 drop !

  18. Chris is hot as hell.. everyone makes mistakes and people need to move on. We are not perfect but the kid is talented and he is trying hard to get better. Love him or hate him: he will still be on top.

  19. This is pretty pathetic. No one is condoning domestic violence just because he performed at the Grammy’s.  That incident happened 3 years ago.  How many of you want everyone judging you for the rest of your life for shit you did when you were 18 years old? He’s not allowed to change and grow into a person?

I also think a lot of people seem to forget that he grew up in a house filled with domestic abuse. That clearly affected him and how he dealt with women during much of his life. But once again, that was 3 years ago. We have no idea what he’s gone through since then.  Until we hear about him hitting someone else I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I’d also be really interested in seeing how many of you that are condemning him are fans of R. Kelly, Roman Polanski, Woody Allen, Ben Roethlisberger (for the Pittsburgh fans), good ole Mel Gibson, or Charlie Sheen (who actually shot his gf with a gun.)

  20. so she deserved to be hit?  What is she supposed to learn from Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick? How to drink? Those women are raging alcoholics and something tells me the ‘West Indian trash’ already knows how to drink. And let’s not forget the only reason Diana Ross is famous is because she railroaded and destroyed everyone who stood in the way of her becoming famous. Real classy.

  21. Saint or not, I’m shocked that you could “agree” that she needs a slap. Especially with your patronizing response below regarding violence. And while we’re on the topic of class, your particularly rude comments about a woman you quite likely don’t know are nothing short of slander and defamation. Classy indeed.

  22. I didn’t feel like looking through all of the comments, but did everyone forget that Riri struck him multiple times with a stiletto? When you have two kids in their early twenties who get into a tiff, it’s not domestic abuse, it’s kids being kids. Was he right to hit her back? Probably not. But we’ve all seen the shoes that bitch wears, can you honestly tell me they’re any less dangerous than a backhand? #GETOVERIT

  23. Do you have proof Diana Ross and Dionne Warrick are alcoholics? Stop slandering these black women. This is typical BS coming from white gay male.

  24. No I don’t know this trashy young woman, but I read enough bad behavior about her. She’s been an negative imagine to the black community. Some women beat or hit men. What is a man suppose to do, let a women beat or hit him? I don’t hear you defending domestic violence against men. What happen to equal rights? I don’t adocate voilence, but if a woman hits or beats on a man, the man should defend himself. Some women are men beaters. Many gay men are in voilent relationships and get abused everyday.

  25. I agree. If Chris Brown were white, I would would these white Queens be so hard on him. It’s still a double standard in this country between whites and blacks. Whites that commit an assault like this, the white community is so forgiving. However, this doens’t applies to blacks in this country. We are discriminated against in the mostly white gay community. I refuse to bow down to the white man, gay or straight.

  26. Women wanted to be treated as equals to men and work in every position as men. Law enforcement is one of these positions. Some women can be very violent and abusive towards men. Are men supposed to let a woman hit or beat on them and not defend themselves? Supposed the woman had a knife or gun coming at a man? Rihanna is a bitch and she could fit the mode as an angry black woman. Men or women don’t deserved to be abused.

  27. “She’s been an negative imagine to the black community.”

Kenneth, having read a handful of your comments on this forum, you’re more of a negative image to the black community than Rihanna will ever be.  Please cut back on the ignorant bullshit you keep spewing.

  28. I just liked your comment about me. Do you know why? Because it shows your supreme idiocy.  Typical BS coming from a white gay male? My 2 black parents will be shocked to learn I’m white.  Let this be a lesson to everyone on here. Before you stay stupid shit make sure you back it up with facts:

Sorry, I couldn’t find anything on her drinking, only her classy arrest in an airport for weed.

Do you know what this is Kenneth? This is you getting served publicly by a ‘white gay male’
    *waits for retort*

  29. You’ve got to be kidding…  A negative image on the black community? What’s so negative about a woman who was in a shitty relationship and came out of it being one of the top selling pop stars in the world? Tyler Perry is MUCH more detrimental to the black community than she is. Get your head out of your ass.

  30. Trey, I could say, you hate men. It’s a double standard when it comes to domestic violence against men by women. The same applies to prostate cancer and breast cancer. All the attention is focused on breast cancer. However, prostate cancer is high in men and particularly black men. I am not condoning Chris Brown’s behavior, but for someone to refer to him as a monkey, I find this comment to be racist. Rihanna isn’t a Saint either. It’s alleged, she attacked Chris Brown first. I guess men aren’t supposed to defend themselves. What happen to women’s liberation and their wanting to be treated as equals to men?

  31.  I’m a believer of second chances and people make stupid mistakes, but I just can’t fathom anyone forgiving that kind of abuse or just letting it be. For one if my favorite celebrity would do what he did to any woman and it was of my knowledge any bit of lust, liking, crush whatever I have on them is GONE! It’s disgusting, inexcusable, and insulting. I’m a really easy going person, but that is one thing I would never let slide. EVER. I used to like his music and thought he seemed like a really cool guy prior to, but lost any respect I had for him. And for him to have a mother who went through abuse as well just makes me stomach turn.
My problem is now, that even after he has done something so horrible, that we can say hey….you know drop out of the spot light for a while after making a pathetic apology, come back make a complete joke of yourself by throwing temper tantrums and destroying property and heyyy, after a little while longer we will reward you. I know his actions don’t have direct relations with his music, but I think well now some people think hey, if chris brown did it then so can I, shit he’s fine now, he’s getting awards and making paper I’ll be fine. I wouldn’t be able to forgive him or any other person that does something so horrible my forgiveness comes in you disappearing from my life and my loathing for you wont spread any farther than it has to. He doesn’t deserve forgiveness like Rhianna didn’t deserve or any other woman deserved to be hit. Plain and simple. Not that I feel passionately about this or anything.

  32.  oh shut up Kenneth, now your just looking for something to complain about probably because you are rooting for Chris Brown and before you start calling me a racist, you should know I’m black too. And I wouldn’t refer to Chris Brown as a monkey just an asshole, because he’s a piece of shit.

  33. Key word: “ALLEGED”

There is no confirmation that Rihanna hit Chris Brown first. It’s pure speculation, likely planted by desperate Chris Brown fans who wanted to see him back in the spotlight.

If you’re truly about “women’s liberation”, then you’d stop saying Rihanna isn’t a saint. A truly liberated woman should be free to flaunt and celebrate her sexuality without uptight, close-minded  jerks like you judging her. Stop acting like you know Rihanna just because of some shit you read in the tabloids.

  34. Are you kidding me? How many acting jobs do you think Mel Gibson booked in the past few years since his “incident”? One? Two?

Did anyone award HIM a fucking Academy Award?

Granted, I don’t think he deserves one, but to play the race card is complete and utter bullshit.

  35. I am just in a state of disbelieve by some of the bullshit that is being said here. This Kenneth character is driving me up the wall and back to hell again with his comments. The whole unequality blah blah blah. Listen. You are quickly become one of the most offensive people I’ve ever encountered in a while. And hey! let’s play every card we can, the race card, the gender card whatever we can to take away from the fact that Chris Brown has beaten a woman, and then come back into the spotlight throwing furniture out windows and acting a fool! AND then its just him being young and dumb! NO! That’s not an acceptable excuse. I grew up in a home watching violence, I saw women around me beat and sent to a hospital and gay straight, black, white WHATEVER it may be it’s NOT ok to hit a woman like that. I don’t believe a woman abusing a man is ok either, it just shouldn’t be happening it’s unfortunate and making excuse for some sorry excuse of a human being making it quite sickening. Don’t throw the race card at me either cause I’m black and its a fucking joke. Like I said earlier white or black, male or female abuse is NOT ok, but some of the things people have defended here is just mind blowing and I refuse to not say something about it.

  36. You have a right to your opinion and I have a right to mine. If a post had been about Charlie Sheen, the white poster boy, there wouldn’t be this many comments on the subject.

  37. I am not going to read the posts before mine simply because I was just as enraged about Brown’s allowance to perform on the show when not a few years back most were against his existence for what he did. As for rumors that Rihanna went back to him or has been secretly seeing him? Good for her, but he is still an abusive punk. If anyone hit a female in my family? I sure as hell would not allow that person to come back, crawling into our lives. Same for the Grammys and the music industry. When news came out about his abuse, NYC radio djs hated on him SO much and they even banned his music for some time. Then, some time later, they are offering tickets and such for his shows? Really? How quickly everyone forgets. I didn’t support him then, I didn’t support him Sunday. I had to leave the room as he was glorified.

  38. I hardly think race is driving this thread, Kenneth. In actuality, this blog is, for the most part, a gaggle of gay Anglophiles. So, if you want to use the race card, no one would really care about Brown. Which brings us to the reason why there is a long thread: he beat up a woman and for the most part? The majority of Americans don’t approve of it.

Also, it’s been my experience that people who defend their beliefs by stating it is their right to have their own opinion, know they are thinking incorrectly and have no other valid argument. Hey, but what do I know?

  39. Whom are you to judge this man, STWTG? You are not GOD and only he can judge Chris Brown. The same applies to Whitney Houston. The white media is tiring this woman apart and calling her crack ho and all types of name. He who’s without sin cast the first stone. People make mistakes in their names and they can change. Most people in America to like homosexualaity and hate on us. The  same applies to the non inclusion of black gay men into the mostly white gay population. Racism is alive in the U.S. and yes, white gay men can discriminate and practice racism. I experienced and seen it. I don’t listen to Chris Brown’s music, but he deserves a second chance like Charlie Sheen, and other white celebrities arrested for the same type of charges. Where some of you gay men get off like you are such Saints? If a woman hits and attacks a man, the man should defend themselves. I would defend myself from physical and verbal abuse from a man or a woman. Race does matter in America whether some want to admit it or not. God truly know what’s in your hearts, that’s if you believe in him.

  40.  The problem is I really don’t believe you are even really thinking about what your saying. I mean you seem to be throwing judgments out every other response and you can’t even see why people are upset. You change your focus on all the other issues at hand in the world, but nobody is talking about all the other stuff we are talking about what Chris Brown did and how he should be accountable for his actions and that he seemingly never really showed any remorse, and he doesn’t seem to have learned from what happened. You keep turning everything into some sort of pity victim card and it’s really old. Racism is alive…no shit. Discrimination of any race, sexual orientation or religion or what have you will never end unfortunately. That’s just the way the world is unfortunately, but quite honestly I never liked Charlie Sheen, never will and I wouldn’t have supported him nor will I ever. But for Chris Brown has talent, I won’t argue that, but when such a nasty incident arises where he shows such displays of a bad decisions and unfavorable character for me, I can’t hold any respect for him as I had previous to what happened. The next problem I have with ANY person that has done something like this is why are they able to come back so quickly and be so welcomed seemingly so easily. That’s where I have a problem. You are accountable for your actions and especially when your in the spotlight what you do in your life will be known by most and when it’s something negative I believe if the person is truly sorry for what they have done it will appear in how they react later and how they handle situations there after and I just don’t believe he has shown he’s learned.

  41. Damn both of you bicker more than me and my little sister. You both need to see that this is pointless. Just agree to disagree on this and move on.

Now on the Alleged attacks on Chris Brown from Rihanna, that is only a speculation true. However ; that is not to say that 3 Years ago he could have left something out of the police report during the time of his questioning.

I would like to say that some of the pictures that I saw while this was big news didn’t look to be true. They look to be altered. So now in the end everything is still as it was back then. Nothing has changed about the past. And nothing will change unless one of the 2 (if you’re religious)or 3 people come out and tell us what really happened let this bullshit go and melt into the ground.

Honestly I would have to say please grow up. Listen to Jill Scott….. “no saint, we all are sinner” from here we need to put our good foot down.  Try to make your self better.
