Whitney Houston: NYC Gay Pride 1999

Whitney Houston deserves more than one post.

Queerty posted this cool clip of Whitney Houston’s surprise appearance at the Pier Dance during New York City’s Gay Pride festivities in the summer of 1999. She performed the dance mixes of “Heartbreak Hotel” and “It’s Not Right. But It’s Ok” (which is the song you play before you throw his shit out in the street).

Gay MTV reporter John Norris (whatever happened to him?) interviewed her afterwards. Although supportive, Whitney was VERY careful to distance herself from any indication that she was gay herself. Lesbian rumors followed the singer her entire career (why else would you marry Bobby Brown?) and she always denied them.

Nevertheless, no one really seemed to care whether Whitney was gay or not. People just adored her. Check out the reaction from the crowd. Queens got INTO it.

  1. So sad.  Drugs take over your life, and then, if you let them, they take your life.  Some people who get into it wake up one day and realize the danger and have enough sense and will power to get out; others unfortunately don’t.  Whitney didn’t.  And I know what I’m talking about.

  2. Yes, this is sad…although her voice was not going to get back to the place it used to be, I think a lot of us were hoping that she would get back to the person she used to be, before all this. It seemed like she was making the effort, which makes it even more sad

  3. She is already soooooo missed!!!  Sending her Love NOW so she can continue her Journey with Grace & Ease!  Luv YOU Whitney!!!

  4. Me, too, Jimmy.  As you know from the rooms, “Some will die so others may live.”  I hope her death will transcend mere gossip and instead be the motivation for others to finally surrender.
