If you received a Manhunt message from a guy who was using the above picture in his profile, would you respond to it or think he was a big fake? That's the danger of using a studio portrait in your profile. Even if you're not as blessed as this guy, the glossy aesthetic immediately flips a switch in some guy's heads. They think, "Is that actually him? He looks too good to be true. Did he just steal these pictures?"
That's the upside of using professional photos–you're paying someone to make you look fantastic. You can take decent shots on your own, but these guys are trained in taking excellent shots. If you do wind up using pro pics, we strongly recommend including at least two self-portraits or random snapshots. This will provide a more rounded perspective on what you look like, as well as providing extra proof that you are… well, you.
But I suppose I should address the question in the title of the post. Should you hire a professional photographer to take your profile pics? Well, that's for you to decide! Do you need to hire one? Absolutely not, but it certainly couldn't hurt!
