The cast for The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye)’s upcoming HBO series, The Idol, is coming together and it’s awesomely camp. Among those announced is out Australian singer and actor (and all-around cutie) Troye Sivan, who’ll be appearing as a series regular according to Variety.
The Idol will focus on a modern-day cult leader and self-help guru who finds himself entangled with an up-and-coming pop star, all set to the backdrop of the music industry.
Along with Sivan and Tesfaye, the series will also star Lily-Rose Depp, Suzanna Son, Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Steve Zissis, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Nico Hiraga, and Anne Heche.
The six-episode series will be directed by Amy Seimetz (The Girlfriend Experience). Tesfaye also will serve as the co-writer and executive producer, alongside Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson.
“When the multi-talented Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye, Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson brought us The Idol, it was clear their subversive, revelatory take on the cult of the music industry was unlike anything HBO had ever done before,” Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming told Variety. “Shortly after, the brilliant duo of Joe Epstein and Amy Seimetz joined forces with the rest of the team, and this dream became a reality.”
Sivan previously starred in films including X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Spud, Boy Erased, and the upcoming Three Months, which is a coming of age comedy about a gay punk teen who strikes up a relationship with someone in his support group following an HIV exposure on the weekend of his high school graduation.
He also recently dropped his new single “Angel Baby,” a sensual queer love song.
