I didn’t say that it was or wasn’t their “fault.” Nothing was said about whose fault it is. Blaming others won’t change the problem. What I said is that stereotypes like this won’t change if they don’t change it, starting with their own behavior and the willingness to perpetuate it.
Stereotypes don’t exist because the characteristic is always 100% accurate. They exist because a characteristic of a small segment of a group is magnified. Until the thug stereotype is challenged by intelligent black men themselves, and is diminished to the point that it hardly exists, the stereotype will continue. Wow, this article recieved 77 comments. I think it’s good to have a healthy conversation about racism in porn. As a gay black and Puerto Rican male, I don’t like seeing Latinos portrayed in porn as thugs or hoodlums. I have never seen whites portrayed as thugs in gay porn. I found some Caucasian, black, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominincan, South American men to be hot. Yes there is discrimination when it comes to looks and age in the homosexual and heterosexual life styles. Let’s be clear… there is no easy way to say this but the gay community, unfortunately, is slightly more segregated than the str8 commmunity. For starters, there are plenty of major websites that didn’t have any models of colour for a long time (Sean Cody, Corbin Fisher, Blake Mason) simply because they felt that people of colour will not sell. Plus, the only people that seem to care about diversifying their websites in the gay community are the major blogs (such as this one) and sites that appeal to a wider range of people (Randy Blue, Falcon Entertainment).
I also think it’s so ironic that gay males are always speaking out about equality for gay people but the community is fairly racist in itself. How many black men get their own site from a major company? How many websites “ACTIVELY” encourage interracial gay sex? I’m not saying the str8 world is perfect. But at least they are breaking down more barriers. The gay community needs to change.
