This Is How You Make An Empowerment Anthem.

For all the youngsters out there, Martha Wash is a powerhouse vocalist who started out as a backup singer for openly gay disco/soul singer Sylvester. She later went on to gain her own fame as one half of The Weather Girls, the dance duo responsible for the worldwide hit “It’s Raining Men” (which could arguably be considered one of the ’80s defining gay anthems).

Oh, and here’s an interesting bit of trivia! The early ’90s club hits “Everybody Everybody“, “Strike It Up” and “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)all featured lead vocals by Wash. Learning this blew my mind more than when I found out that the female rap on Positive K‘s “I Got A Man” was just a pitch-shifted version of Positive K himself… But I’m getting way off topic here!

Wash has been actively making music since the 1970s, never going a single decade without lending her vocal talent to various tracks. Her latest album Something Good came out back in January of this year, and it’s full of inspirational, occasionally gospel-tinged tunes that have a whole lot more to say than, let’s say, Katy Perry‘s “Roar“.

In fact, the video for “It’s My Time” finally came out last week. While the visual itself might not necessarily blow your mind, you’ve simply got to respect the 59 year-old singer’s heartfelt performance. Of course, it’s amped up significantly on the song’s two dance mixes, my favorite of which is embedded below. You can grab ’em all here, if you feel so inclined.

  1. Of course, the part of the story you forgot to tell is that Walsh was cut out of all the C+C Music Factory videos because producers didn’t like the look of her, in the words of Ms. Tyra, “fabulously real” body. So, if we like the voice, we might want to tone down the fat hatred, boys.

  2. (I actually had that part in there, but I edited it out for some strange reason.)

She was also cut out of the Black Box videos, in favor of a French model who lip-synched their songs.

  3. loved her back in the 90’s… love her now… she still has that voice that can put many of these younger girls to shame.
