The Tony Awards: They Gayest Show On Earth

Neil Patrick Harris Tony Awards

Y’all thought the Dr. was nothing more than just a hunk of sex & relationship man-meat. Nay-nay my cynical readers. I am also a world-class, snooty theater queen. I decided to break from my usual weekly Wednesday posting schedule to share my expert opinion on The Tony Awards. And by “expert”, I mean “suck it”.

The entire evening could be summed up in one sentence: Move the Tony telecast to PBS! What could’ve been a charming show, was plagued with cringe-worthy moments of mediocrity thanks to Les Moonves and CBS, who insisted that the Tony’s try ratings gimmicks like drunk, washed up 80’s rockers (though the schadenfreude aspect of seeing Bret Michaels head banged by the scenery really was awesome!) and additional musical numbers from… wait for it… touring companies. And for those of you who saw the show, let me just say this—the minute Elle Woods starting “singing” So Much Better from Legally Blond the difference between a Touring cast and a Broadway cast became painfully clear. You are no Laura Bell, honey (I don’t even know her name).

Also, was this a nationally televised program showcasing Broadway theater, or was it Battle of the Bands in the Schenectady Junior High Multi-Purpose Room? Because considering the sound and audio, you’d think it was the latter? Though my kind heart would chalk it up to a bad start, the problems persisted throughout the telecast. You couldn’t hear any of the singers (though you could hear people waiting in the wings) during the first three minutes of that schizophrenic, kitchen-sink of an opening number.

Some negative points aside, I think it was a decent show. Neil Patrick Harris was fantastic ( a great improvement from the aloof job Whoopi Goldberg did last year). And though he’s no Hugh Jackman, his closing number was very funny (did he even write it, though?).

What did y’all think of last night’s Tony Awards?

  1. i saw a bit of the opening where the kids were dancing with the chairs and elton’s mic wasn’t really turned on.
and then i saw a bit of “Rock of Ages”..
