The Eversons: “Could It Ever Get Better?”

Okay. What’s the best way to describe Wellington-based band The Eversons? I suppose you could call them a “more fun version of Pavement“, but that’s assuming the people you’re talking to are familiar with Pavement. I make no assumptions of that sort, considering I didn’t even know who Pavement were until college…

Think mid-’90s indie rock with an occasional chorus of back-up vocals that recall early ’60s girl groups. The latter technique is employed in a particularly effective fashion on their scene-stealing album track “Creepy” and, to a lesser extent, on their lead single “Could It Ever Get Better?”.

I haven’t yet had the chance to fully absorb their debut LP Summer Feeling, so I can’t say for sure whether I’d recommend it as a full package. However, you should at least give it a listen if you’re into this genre of music. There’s some good stuff there!

  1. Let me go ahead and answer the question posed in the title – No, it is highly unlikely that they will ever get better.  Which is a tough break cause where they are starting from aint very good to begin with.

What are you thinkin man?   Oh wait you told us what you were thinkin.   “mid-90’s indie rock” .   So heres an idea lets leave the mid-90’s indie rock to indie rock groups that were successful in the mid-90’s and listen to them and actually enjoy that time and the memories of what was.   This love orgy for all things retro by my fellow gen Xer’s needs to come to a screeching, blood curdling, grind the brake pad down to the metal STOP!

Sorry maybe Im just having a hard morning but these guys sound like a really, really unflattering early Wheezer tribute band that has suddenly decided to try playing their own (un)original yet still really really unflattering material…

  2. I was lead to believe that’s why they provide these text boxes labeled “comments”,  no??

To be fair(though not as a defense for my negative review above, I stand by that) I generally find your music offerings to be pretty much in line with my tastes and often appreciate the 411 you provide on something new and enjoyable that I might not have discovered elsewhere.  So please accept my gratitude in that regard….just not today,   😉

  3. Haha, no offense was taken! I fully acknowledge that they’re a knockoff of much-better ’90s bands, and their lyrics leave something to be desired… But I still like them? ::shrug::

  4. Sounds to me like could it ever get better is a weezer thing but then the album goes off in a different direction. I really like this one which is more 60s sounding: http://theeversons.lilchiefrecords.com/track/marriage

  5. That’s exactly the sort of ’60s girl group, call-and-response stuff that I was talking about! I love when they do that stuff.
