It turns out that condom shaming is alive and well! As most of you already know, we published an exclusive interview with Lucas Entertainment model Dato Foland last Friday, in which he (or someone impersonating him) stated as if it were scientifically proven that no one fantasizes about sex with a condom. He referred to the act as “unnatural”, echoing words that anti-gay bigots would use for any erotic behavior between two men.
I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again—you can express your enthusiasm for bareback sex without throwing condoms under the bus. As long as you’re making responsible choices that respect the health of yourself and your partner(s), you shouldn’t ever have to feel ashamed about the sex you’re having. Don’t let anybody tell you that your fantasies aren’t valid.

There are probably many things involved in sex between two men that people don’t fantasize about (mostly). Doesn’t make them any less real or necessary.
You know the attraction is real when you can remain hard with a condom on.
If one is THAT insistent about sex with a condom not being real sex, I’ve always felt that maybe they’re doing something wrong. People want to bareback, fine. But don’t tell me the sex I have isn’t real or as intimate as yours.
Thanks, Dewitt. I read Dato’s interview and was mildly put off by his remarks. People can choose to make choices about their health and sex life and that’s 100% fine if all parties agree to it. Personally, I get what he means in one sense that wearing condoms isn’t “natural”. Sure, sex is more natural without condoms, but it’s also more risky. Okay, PREP can greatly reduce the risk of contracting HIV and that’s great, but there are other STIs to consider, and barebacking is for many people not a risk worth taking. I think the discussion is valid because people are making that choice. I just wish it was a discussion that was done with more respect to people with opposing positions. As long people are making educated decisions, I’m fine with whatever they prefer because it’s their body and their health. But it’s not the choice I would make and I prefer watching porn with safer sex practices. And yes, I HAVE fantasized about sex with condoms… it’s silly for him to believe that because he doesn’t, everyone else thinks the same way.

Since when does anyone give a shit about the deep thoughts of porn stars? As gay men, we’ve heard the “natural vs. unnatural” argument in other discussions. This is the basic premise… “natural = legitimate, and it’s okay to reject anything that’s not legitimate.” It’s an argument that’s no more valid when talking about condom use as it is when discussing gay rights, dental care or air travel. How “natural” is it to take Truvada? In an industry where most (or at least, many) of the people involved are HIV+, I’m just fine watching two hot guys wearing condoms and avoiding the spread of infectious diseases, thank you very much.
