State Department Will Recognize Same Sex Couples

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to announce that the State Department will begin to recognize same-sex couples. This means benefits like diplomatic passports, use of medical facilities abroad and other benefits that were denied to same-sex spouses in the past, and still are on the federal level in other agencies.

A leaked draft of the statement reads, "It will also help the department attract and retain personnel in a
competitive environment where domestic partner benefits and allowances
are increasingly the norm for world-class employers. At bottom, the
department will provide these benefits for both opposite-sex and
same-sex domestic partners because it is the right thing to do."

This is also potentially one of the first direct affronts to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and comes at a time when the Administration's response to gay rights has been less than stellar.
