Sky Ferreira is the last person I’d expect to channel Shirley Manson and Courtney Love. Lo and behold, that’s what she’s doing on her brand new single “Red Lips”. Fans (or non-fans) of her debut EP As If! might view this departure from the dance/pop arena as a desperate bid for credibility, but I’d argue there’s something much more natural about this.
Much as I loved tracks like “99 Tears”, I never really believed Ferreira as a “pop star”. She feels much more at home as a ’90s alt-rock throwback artist, and I’d like to think she’ll embrace that direction (or do whatever the fuck she wants) on her upcoming full-length album. What about you? Are you ready to hear more, or do you wish the world would stop trying to make Sky Ferreira happen?

I love it all–the song, the video, and most of all the tarantula! But that chick clearly never learned to color within the lines.
